Cask Conditioned Handpump Wellington Birmingham. An amber coloured beer with whitish bubbles for a head. A proper English barley wine. Boozy Christmas cake fruitiness throughout. Dipped bread and candlewax. No massive alcohol flavours but there is a warming quality. English style hops. Nice and tongue coating. Tasty and improves through the glass.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Svesse (5197) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - DEC 29, 2011
(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2011) Amber colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with dried fruit, citrus, resin and hints of oak wood. Malty, fruity taste with notes of citrus, caramel, resin, oak wood and a bitter-sweet finish with hints of orange marmalade. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness and a generous bitterness. Quite well balanced for a dry hopped barley wine. Very nice and tasty.

On tap (@The Flower Pot, Maidstone, Kent, U.K.): Clear, deep golden, no head to speak of, sherry-like nose: dried fruits, cellary and caramelly notes, wood and yeast included; solid dry bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied as expected; very vinous bitter-sweet finish: almonds, old wine, cellar, mould with hops sticking to the palate for more than 30 minutes! (this was my last beer in Maidstone, I could feel the hops ’til I reached my hotel-room!!!) Great hybrid-brew, it is hard to say, if it is a beer or a wine......
