During 2007, an alliance based on friendship and love of great beer between Thornbridge’s Head Brewer Stefano Cossi and Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver led to the brewing of this refined strong ale which has been matured for over 18 months before being bottled. The collection includes the unoaked Alliance Strong Ale and two finished exclusively in fortified wine casks: Spanish oak Pedro Ximenez Sherry (PX) and American oak Madeira. We hope you enjoy this unique tasting experience.

Bottle from madbitch, bottle shop owner in the U.K. A pricey little import, bit well worth it as a once-in-a-lifetime drinking experience. A beer, yet a spirit, with sherry, and a scotch. Yes al of the above. Wine aromas, more yeasty in the second sample. Super lacey on brown-grapefruit, with a soapy head. Understated carbonation, a good mouthfeel. A good drinker. Fruity, mostly orange and tangerine, very fine hops.

Bottles, at the tasting at the Rake, 17th Jan 09, with harrisoni and chriso. I’m not in such a pickle as Ian, since my scoring for the PX and the Madeira is identical. The PX has a strong woody aroma along with good sherry hints. The Maderia cask version has lots of toasted nuts and coconut. Slightly citric hint and a nagging aftertaste.

Thanks to Craig for opening this! Poured medium coppery-amber with a short cap of eggshell head. The aroma was heavy with toasted toffee, nutty notes, and something akin to cherries with odd accents of jalapenos and a bit of oak.. perhaps a little grappa on the back.. warm, but well-balanced. The flavor found vinous notes, caramel, and toffee sweetness with spicy cinnamon, nutmeg, and sour oaky accents.. hits of vanilla and Madeira around.. warm aftertaste of barrel-y character and sherry. Heavily-bodied, spicy, and warm on the palate with lots of barrel character.. a little strange, but tasty.
