Bracia is the Celtic name for a beverage brewed in Iron Age Europe with reference found on a Roman inscription at Haddon Hall,Derbyshire. Little is known about this except it was high in alcohol, brewed with cereals and, most probably, honey. Thornbridge’s Bracia has been infused with a generous amount of dark and bitter Chestnut Honey. This was sourced by Head Brewer Stefano Cossi from Beekeeper Onelia Pin in the Alpine foothills of North East Italy. Aromas are of chestnut, honey, cappuccino, white chocolate, dark fruits, vibrant fresh peel. The mouthfeel is velvety and rich, with notes of coffee, chocolate, liquorice and hazelnuts with warming alcohol, cocoa and a little peat in the finish. Malts: Maris Otter, Brown, Munich, Dark Crystal, Black, Chocolate, Peated and Roasted Barley. Hops: Target, Pioneer, Hallertau Northern Brewer and Sorachi Ace. Bracia can be cellared for up to one year, maybe longer. Its flavours will evolve so why not enjoy the experience of opening a bottle every once in a while.

Strong aroma of chocolate and coffee. Very dark in appearance with a brown foam. Sweet full body taste, with a strong presence of chocolate and coffee, a hint of liquorice nicely balanced with the bittersweet taste of the chestnut honey and nice lasting chocolate aftertaste. Great beer, perfect for dark ale/porter/stout fans.

Glass courtesy of fellow-Meetjeslandian PriorL@Tilquin English Beer Festival’15, merci maat! Opaque dark brown pour. Smells like a slowly opening chalky milk stout, releasing damp muscovado and fruit sugars as it sits. Strangely spicy in taste, with an earthy tobacco leaf dryness underneath, a host of fruit caramels and muscovado sugars, contoured by a natural ("organic") wet pasture/manureish yeast profile and a bit of an abv burn. The missing link between Doppelbock, Belgian Dark Ale (Gulden Draak) and UK old ale? Hard to gauge, might revisit.

Draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival 2015. Very good honey notes predominate the aromas and in the taste which goes perfectly with this kind of dark complex brew. Delicious.

Bottle 50cl. Pitch black with a caramel coloured head. Very intense aroma of subtle chocolate, roasted malt and tar. This is what I call a rich beer. Full bodied, dark chocolate, espresso and some dried fruit. Very nice. Long lasting finish. Perfectly in balance with a pleasant bitterness. An absolute superb beer.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 19B, adapted). Bottle 50 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: aroma of sweet coffee (cappuccino, coffe and milk), black liquorice, dark chocolate, slight roasted cereals and faint wallnuts. soft alcohol aroma on the background. APPEARANCE: very dark brown color and opaque. brown average head with average retention. alcohol derived viscosity with some lacing. TASTE: initial prominent coffee and dark chocolate with a supportive moderatly sweet background. notes of black liquorice and a faint wallnut note. apparent low hop derived bitterness altough the finish is bitter from the roasted malts. finishes semi-dry with a long coffee-like and nutty aftertaste. PALATE: velvety texture with a medium-full body. smooth alcohol warming. OVERALL: an outstanding and complex dark ale that should be enjoyed at a very slow pace. higly recommended.
