COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned;
Bracia is the Celtic name for a beverage brewed in Iron Age Europe with reference found on a Roman inscription at Haddon Hall,Derbyshire. Little is known about this except it was high in alcohol, brewed with cereals and, most probably, honey. Thornbridge’s Bracia has been infused with a generous amount of dark and bitter Chestnut Honey. This was sourced by Head Brewer Stefano Cossi from Beekeeper Onelia Pin in the Alpine foothills of North East Italy. Aromas are of chestnut, honey, cappuccino, white chocolate, dark fruits, vibrant fresh peel. The mouthfeel is velvety and rich, with notes of coffee, chocolate, liquorice and hazelnuts with warming alcohol, cocoa and a little peat in the finish. Malts: Maris Otter, Brown, Munich, Dark Crystal, Black, Chocolate, Peated and Roasted Barley. Hops: Target, Pioneer, Hallertau Northern Brewer and Sorachi Ace. Bracia can be cellared for up to one year, maybe longer. Its flavours will evolve so why not enjoy the experience of opening a bottle every once in a while.

Historical ale apparently referring to a style of ancient honey beer called ’bracia’ in Antiquity, so I had no idea what to expect here. Made with eight malt components and four hop varieties along with chestnut honey - an exciting promise. Thick and rocky, yellowish head, colour a very dark brownish bronze. Impressively perfumed aroma of lots of things: honey of course, pear, hazelnuts, chocolate, cappuccino, rosemary, aniseed, caramel, and so on, and so on - one of those luxurious ales I would rather whiff than drink. Taste of dark fruits, berries, very profound maltiness with caramel and some roasted chocolatey accent in the lead, sweetish honey, spices, very complex and ending in a toasted bitterness with deliciously warming alcohol without astringency, next to floral and herbal hoppiness. An absolute delight - though I can hardly imagine beer quality in Antiquity was this good...

Pours a thin beige head that settles to the edge. The body is an opaque deep brown. Nose of leather, licorice candy, rubber and nutty chocolate. Starts mildly malted than quickly hits with a leathery tobacco mid-palate, boozy, deep semi-sweet bitter chocolate and prunes. Very lovely. Thank you Alex for this experience :)

Pours deep black. Lovely solid tan head. Leaves good lacing on glass. Big chocolate, coffee, alcohol, lactose, aniseed liquorice, nuts,. Flavour is a creamy milk latte, caramel, hazelnut, dry earth, liquorice, cherry. A slightly dry finish but it is so luscious it’s leaves a milk chocolate aftertaste. Slight alcohol hit. It’s a beer you delve into and find it hard to leave. Layers of complexity. Great beer.
