Coinciding with the release of his bottled range in the UK market, Doug joined the Thornbridge team to recreate a version of his Red Ale, which has recently medalled at the World Beer Cup and North American Beer Awards. The 5.9% beer is crammed with speciality malts and with a twist on the popular American Red Style, it has been hopped instead with a massive amount of oil-rich English hops including Admiral, Bramling Cross, Phoenix, Pilgrim and First Gold. “We wanted to take a great US style of beer and put a bit of a British twist on it,” says Brewery Manager, Kelly Ryan. “We don’t want people to dismiss the fantastic breadth of flavour and aroma that UK hops can give to a beer... not every beer should be about US or NZ hops. It was also amazing to work with such a stalwart of the US microbrewing industry”. Colorado Red, as the beer has been named in tribute to Doug’s brewery, will be released on Monday August 2nd at a Meet the Brewer event in the Cask and Kitchen in Pimlico, London. The beer is described as having hints of subtle toffee malt, complimented by a heady mix of dried fruit, candied peel, hop resin, rosewater and a fantastic blend of herbal UK hop notes. The bitterness is well rounded and the beer finishes with hints of citrus and roasty malt characteristics. Thornbridge’s very own UK Brewer of the Year!

Cask handpull at CP&K, Pimlico. Strawberry fruity. Strawberry and a touch of diacetyl. Bit of biscuit. Maybe a bit rich on the mouth. No dryness, no big hop presence on the finish. Bit of tart strawberry on finish. Good and interesting and reminded me of the BrewDog Zephyr that tasted to me of strawberry shortcake. I expected more PNW hops on an American red ale interpretation.

Very intense and complex aroma of resin, grass, citrus just like an IPA but with a really solid caramel core. It doesn’t have floral and fruity hints like the american ales, unlike them it’s more... peremptory. So beautiful red amber clean color with a big rocky white head. Highly bitter taste, as we expect from this style. Medium bodied, average carbonation, long lasting bitter finish. A very very good one!

Bottle from beer gonzo. Pours clear copper brown with a light frothy head. Slightly floral nose, then a pleasant caramel sweetness balancing the bitter. Subtle hints of fruit including citrus at the end. Very drinkable with plenty going on to make it interesting. Very good bitter.

Dark amber/coper in colour. Caramel, berries, brown sugar and dried fruit in the aroma. Fruity, nutty and slightly resinous taste with notes of toffee, brown sugar, blackcurrant, raspberry and grassy hops.

Bottle at DTE tasting. Clear copper pour with thick white head. Aroma of toasty malt, nice fresh grassy hop, quite nice, mild english toffee and tea notes. Taste is nice and peppery, grassy hop, very light toffee and toast maltiness. Palate is med bodied with light-med carbonation. Another nice beer, Thornbridge rarely fails to impress me.

Clear red beer with a thin head. Light hoppy smell. Flavour is like a red rye beer which makes sense. The hops balance things out nicely and the use of English hops keeps it relatively mild.

Bottle at the DTE tasting, Den Haag, via Cotteridge Wines. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin whispy white head. The aroma is woody resin hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a clean crisp, big hop, light metallic, woody palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
