Coinciding with the release of his bottled range in the UK market, Doug joined the Thornbridge team to recreate a version of his Red Ale, which has recently medalled at the World Beer Cup and North American Beer Awards. The 5.9% beer is crammed with speciality malts and with a twist on the popular American Red Style, it has been hopped instead with a massive amount of oil-rich English hops including Admiral, Bramling Cross, Phoenix, Pilgrim and First Gold. “We wanted to take a great US style of beer and put a bit of a British twist on it,” says Brewery Manager, Kelly Ryan. “We don’t want people to dismiss the fantastic breadth of flavour and aroma that UK hops can give to a beer... not every beer should be about US or NZ hops. It was also amazing to work with such a stalwart of the US microbrewing industry”. Colorado Red, as the beer has been named in tribute to Doug’s brewery, will be released on Monday August 2nd at a Meet the Brewer event in the Cask and Kitchen in Pimlico, London. The beer is described as having hints of subtle toffee malt, complimented by a heady mix of dried fruit, candied peel, hop resin, rosewater and a fantastic blend of herbal UK hop notes. The bitterness is well rounded and the beer finishes with hints of citrus and roasty malt characteristics. Thornbridge’s very own UK Brewer of the Year!

Cask Handpump at the Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico 02/08/2010 Big hop aroma. Amber red coloured a little rich on the palate and strong in alcohol with a hint of dryness and bitterness in a malt finish.

Bottle, hoppy aroma, full of herbs and resin accompanied by dried fruits in the background. Intense and rich, great aroma. Pours clear, red with rich head leaving a very nice lacing. Taste is rather malty, with hints of caramel. good bitterness, light sweetness. medium carbonation. Finish could have been better, it’s a bit too long and stays on the palate - the only downside. Other than that, it’s a very good beer.

Bottle from Chester Beer & Wine. Reddish brown pour with a reserved off white head. Caramel malts, fruits and some hop present in the beak. Sweetish malt led flavour with some rescuing hoppage and a little fruitiness. Dryish bitter finish. Its fine but nothing to get too worked up about.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a finger thick off white head. Aroma is roasted malts with bread and toffee, as well as nice citrusy hops with zesty orange peel. Medium body with average carbonation. Flavour is caramel malts with bread, kandi and toffee, as well as zesty orange peel hops with floral and resinous notes giving a lingering bitter and grainy finish.

Bottle from Vika enjoyed at home
Brown, quite clear, big tanned head. Smell of fruity hops, caramel, bread, some spices. Moderate sweet, biscuit malts, some dried fruits and caramel. Moderate to medium bitter, nice citrus hops and also a touch of earthy hops. A very well balanced ESB which also tastes superb

Very intense and complex aroma of resin, grass, citrus just like an IPA but with a really solid caramel core. It doesn’t have floral and fruity hints like the american ales, unlike them it’s more... peremptory. So beautiful red amber clean color with a big rocky white head. Highly bitter taste, as we expect from this style. Medium bodied, average carbonation, long lasting bitter finish. A very very good one!
