4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330 ml bottle, as Thornbridge Hall Russian Imperial Stout, at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.4%. Black colour, large tan head. Exquisite aroma, strong vinous and oaky notes that nearly overpower the roasty and chocolate notes in the background. Full and rich mouthfeel. Strong flavour with loads of malty sweetness, blackstrap molasses, salty liquorice, tobacco, coffee, dark chocolate and oak.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
My Bottom Line:
This ever-so-soothing Imperial Stout details raisins, molasses, roasted bread, earth and chocolates, a kaleidoscopic malt profile which lingers long after the sip.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam tops the darkest brown.
-Mouthfeel is rich and cuddly. Not an overly sugary example, but far from an anemic one too.
-Prunes also appear in the aftertaste. Just a gorgeous specialty malt treatment.
-I just love Imperial Stouts like these which aren’t dialed in AND have as much dessert potential as most by-the-book examples of the style.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black with wispy yellowish head. Aroma of wood, liquorice, heavy malts. Strong liquorice taste with alcohol hit. Heavy sweet malts which are balanced by the liquorice bitter. Oily mouthfeel, a little odd for a stout. Alcohol isn’t overpowering for the strength. Low carbonation. Not bad but was expecting a bit more from this.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap. Jet black with mocha head that dissipates fairly quickly. Not much lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, chocolate notes and some dark ripe fruit. Taste is awesome - lots of complexity. Only slightly sweet and slightly bitter. Smooth and creamy body. Excellent RIS.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Black, creamy head. Very sharp black, salty, roasty licorice nose. A bit of piny forestyness. Body is full. Salty roastedness, licorice. Burnt rubber, some gasoline, garage. A very heavy drink flavourwise, more than most 10-15 abv:s I’ve had. Feels almost like that crazy >30 brewdog RIS in some sense (without the excessive though).

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle split at CBC tasting with Aaron, big thanks to JackL, 08/07/13.
Light black with a tan head that clears to a swirl.
Nose is roast malt, liqourice, dark fruit, light herbal notes, dates, dark toffee, bitter roast.
Taste comprises brown sugars, woody herbal tones, dark fruits, light cocoa, leather, roast malt.
Full bodied with moderate carbonation, dry roasty finish.
Decent enough impy but I did have slightly higher expectations for this one. The alcohol is well integrated.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle 33 cl, bottled on december 2011. Pours dark brown in color with a small tan head. Light roasted
coffee, a bit of vanilla and even a bit of smoky notes in aroma. Salty licorice, some soy sauce and just
a bit bitter chocolate in taste. A bit of some burnt wet wood and coffee in aftertaste. Gets a bit
smoother towards finish, even if there’s a bit of salty seawater and burnt wooden roasted notes.
