COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled, special
Our Imperial Oatmeal Stout has been brewed using a single temperature infusion mash. A large proportion of Scottish Oatmeal was combined with a profusion of English coloured malts to give an incredibly rich and decadent brew. To bring harmony to this powerful malt grist, English Fuggle hops were used exclusively for bittering and adding aromas of stone fruit. After primary fermentation and a period of conditioning, the beer was aged in famous Kentucky Bourbon barrels for six months, lending their unique influence to the final flavour. Conditioning was then finished in the bottle using Champagne yeast. Malts : Maris Otter, Flaked Oats, Crystal, Dark Crystal, Chocolate and Roast Barley Hops : Fuggles

Bottle at SBWF 2013. Pitch black beer with a nice beige head. Roasted malt aroma, licorice, vanilla, figs, raisins, whiskey notes, bourbon, some plums. Roasted chocolate flavor, caramel, licorice, raisins, vanilla, bourbon notes, peat, hay notes, creamy, some warming alcohol. Long bourbon and vanilla finish. Very good!

Tap at Hallamshire House, Sheffield. Clear, deep chestnut brown with a cherry red tinge. Beige halo of a head. Aroma is an instant hit of bourbon. Lots of melted dark chocolate. Booze soaked vine fruits. A dark honey sweetness too. Taste has a bitter, dry roast coffee element. The boozy vine fruits make the finish dry and warming. Might have expected more oatmeal smoothness, but nevertheless this is the kind of beer you don’t want to end. Very nice.

Bottle from Beer HIve, Edinburgh [101013]
Pitch black, frothy tan head that dissipates, some lacing
Aroma of deep soft roasted malts, soft coffee, bit woody, plain chocolate, getting some of the barrel aging, hint of dark fruits
Taste of deep rich soft bitter roast, woody, touch of whisky, soft burnt notes, bitter dark chocolate, rich dark smooth malts, some espresso, quite milky from the oats, some alcohol noticeable, rich flavour
Palate - soft carb, medium to full body, creamy texture. Finish - warming alcohol, as main flavour, soft bitter burnt roast, rich malt bitter bit dry alcohol tail
Overall - Good stuff but a tad overpriced here at £11 a bottle

Pitch black color, very big frothy dark brown head. Big bourbon notes dominate with just faint oatmeal and dark chocolate note. Very full bodied, full on bourbon, dark chocolate, but lack complexity, the bourbon is just too strong. However, the alcohol is really well hidden, the beer is super smooth, warming and highly enjoyable... if you love bourbon, like I do. Has potential to go to the next level, but falls a bit short. The rating only reflects my love of bourbon, if not, it would be 0.2-0.3 lower.

Opaque dark brown beer with a good size pale tan head. Palate is soft and airy, semi dry. Smooth and mild dark malts. Tangy mellow bourbon, semi sweet. Light vanilla and malt cream. Tangy dried fruits before the light and semi dry finish. Hides the abv very well. Light, creamy, tangy, sweet, great!

Bottle from Coppers, Newcastle. An inky black beer that pours with a rapidly disappearing tan head. It has rich chocolate and whisky, vanilla and oak flavours, slight liquorice and coffee notes with a creamy richly warming fruity and whisky finish.

Black pour with a beige head and cling lace. Aroma of fruit, figs, bourbon and earthy oak. Gorgeous. Black current, chocolate malt, liquorice, mint flavour with a black pepper and new leather flavour. Warming ale. Smooth as velvet. Absolutely gorgeous stout. Love getting a gem like this baby once in a while. Quality.

Thanks to gethinbeer for sharing this treat. Nose is awesome - loads of sweet treacle, fruitcake, plum pudding and soft vanilla and oaky sweetness. Lots of milky chocolate and a bit of rich plummy hardcore as well. Herbal and woody bitterness but this is dominated by sweet mid-palate character. Warming brings up even more cocoa and a bit of vineous character. Slight sherryish finish with a touch of brown sugar leading into the intensely roasty finish. Really damn tasty.
