A citrus dominated India Pale Ale, its immediate impression is soft and smooth yet builds to a crescendo of massive hoppiness accentuated by honey. An enduring, bitter finish.

(Rating #3719)

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2011 (500ml Bottle) . Drank from a Duvel glass it resembles Duvel ,but without such a charsimatic head and is impersonating Punk IPA @ 6% in flavour (not as vibrant as the old punk though) .Opens surprisingly sappy and syrupy ,reminiscent of an un-fresh American IPA , . Some crisp dryness emerges , complemented by fruity hop air-freshner like bitterness . This IPA ,while pretty plesant lacked some ummph on hops and freshness on texture. One to re8 soon

Bottle. Pours a light golden amber with a fluffy white head. Aroma and flavor are floral, spicy, somewhat citrusy English hops and some biscuity malt. A bit of honey. Finishes fairly bitter. Light carbonation and palate. Quite nice. Glad I got a chance to try this one. I hope a real English IPA; the hop profile is very different from an American one.

500ml bottle, Rehills, Ncl. Floral citrus aroma with some hop resin that transfers well into the taste. Dry on the palate, big burst of flavour on the back of the tongue, grapefruit and orange very obvious. A big beer that I’ve not had bottled before, but I think the Kipling beats this relatively easily..

Bottle at North Bar, Leeds. While the label is particularly good, with bohemian psychedelia, the beer itself is pale yellow in colour. Nose is hoppy and floral, with citrus. Taste is very nice, and fairly complex. Fruity/grapefruity, with sweet malts balancing the hops very nicely. Medium bodied, quite dry finish. Very nice and well balanced.

Bottle at North Bar, Leeds. Pale, almost transparent yellow amber pour. Floral, citrus nose. Hint of citrus peel. Palate is slightly fruity, grapefruit and lemon with a hint of bread malt to balance it out. Finish is medium bitter, really well-balanced.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color and a forthy white head. Aroma is slightly skunky, with notes of sweet malts, lots of citrus hops and some floral notes. The flavor isn’t skunky though, I get alot of citrus, some of the floral notes and the sweet malts. The body is medium with a dry mouthfeel. Overall an ok take on the American IPA, sucks that it was skunky though.

I received a 500ml bottle from a friend in England. I poured it into a nonic pint glass.

Appearance: bright, almost fluorescent banana-skin yellow. Slight hazy. Forms a fluffy, white head which retains well and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: Due to the olive-green bottle this beer has clearly skunked as if it were in a light green bottle like Heineken. A deep inhalation reveals some citrusy notes, but otherwise it’s not very aromatic.

Taste: Sometimes a skunky-smelling beer isn’t quite as foul in the taste, but Thornbridge Jaipur was just as bad in the palate. From start to finish there’s a sharp sour tang with an accompanying hop bitterness. If I really dig deep I notice some lemony qualities, but they are buried by the skunky sourness. The bitterness almost seems salty in a way and perhaps if I had some food to go with this beer it would help balance out the flaws.

I know the beer isn’t meant to taste this way, but I have to review what’s presented before me and even though the bottle’s freshness date would seem to indicate it’s quite a fresh beer, there’s plenty of things that could account for the skunkiness. I can tell there’s something more genuine, refined, and authentic to this palate at the core, but the spoilage is obscuring it.

Mouthfeel: Slightly thick, tepid and noticeably dry while in the mouth.

Drinkability: While only 5.9% ABV, Jaipur drinks as if it were a beer twice its size. The salty bitterness is very strong on the tongue and the dry, salty aftertaste is as far from refreshing as you can get. I could tolerate the palate, but I had to drink it in sips. I think a fresher bottle would be more drinkable.

Overall, a very disappointing experience especially considering this was a gift from a friend directly from the source (or the home country at least).
