A Sim rate (cask at the Euston Tap): Sweet, tangy and hoppy aroma. Plenty of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and winter berries. Great looking beer with an inviting caramel colour and a head that just doesnít give up. Flavour is full-on malt and a bitterness that lasts with its nutmeg and cinnamon spice. Really great beer. I could drink loads of this....if only we had an open fire rather than a space heater!

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask at the Euston Tap. Dark garnet pour with a sturdy, white cream head. Malty aroma, with some cinnamon and other wintery spices, sugarplums, and hazelnut. Lovely, spicy flavor with perhaps nuitmeg and cinnamon, along with gingerbread, and faintly bitter lemon. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dries out a good bit in the finish, with lingering spices, some ginger tang, and sweet bread, along with modest bitterness. Better than decent.

Cask, handpump at The Wellington, Birmingham 13-12-09 Pours chestnut with a slim white head. The aroma is malty and spicy. Taste is malty with demarara sugar, caramel and a dry bitterness which is quite subdued and comes through at the end. Fine enough but not quite up to the usual Thornbridge high standards. 3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: Modestly hazed, amberesque body with a scant, bubbly, off-white head.
Smell: Scents of dark caramel and toffee, though not rather effusive, a goodly-sized pinch of dried herbs, and juniper giving an impression of gin.
Taste: A touch of dry caramel and dry toffee, imparting just a bit of flavor, but no real sweetness joins an herbaceous taste of unsweetened iced tea and handful of grains. Slight pine. Light bitterness. Somewhat savory, faintly tart inclusion of juniper berries which carries through the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Light carbonation.
Overall: Itís fine and suitable for a spiced-up English ale.
