COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours clear, near-to-black brown with a short, dark khaki head. Big centennial hop aroma, grass, grapefruit and pine with a nice citric hint from the sorachi. Couldn’t detect any nelson. Taste is a nice ligbt pine and acidic citrus fruit flavour, dominated by dark toasty malts and a light roasted espresso/mocha flavour. Really smooth with a lingering pine and roasted malt aftertaste. Awesome black IPA!

Bottle from Mane Liquor. A damn good take on a black IPA. Dark, yet clear, brown pour with a big, frothy beige head. Nose is very tropical and grassy with some sweet vanilla in the foreground. Almost a woodiness to this as well. Nelson comes through a lot for me in the taste with heavy influence on ripe stone fruits. Very creamy stuff. Well done

Bottle at mane liquor thornbridge tasting. Pours a darkish brown with a small off white head. Not your usual black ipa pour! Nose is all about the passionfruit, grapefruit and citrus. Nelson sauvin hops prominent. Taste is the fruit backed by the dark malts, hint of spicy pepperiness and mild roasty coffee notes. Actually quite sessionable sitting on 6.6%. Not as bold compared to other black ipas I've had but a good change up none the less. Great stuff ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml Bottle. This pours a almost black beer with the slightest of reddish hues. It has a thick tan head that leaves a moderate lacing. Take a smell of this beel and your senses ignite- theres grapefruit but also malt, dark chocolate, maltiness, hops and the faintest hint of burnt toffee. Tastewise this is extremely complex and this review will not do it justice. Its a bitter grapefruit start with a subtle move through burnt toffee (again) to biscuit and malt through to a bitter finisdh with a re-emergance of the grapefruit. Wonderfully complex and an absloute stonking beer. I may have found a new favourite!! If I was to recommend a English craft beer to someone who wasnt familiar with our products- this would be it- it has everything yet its not over done = BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

Bottle from utobeers. bbd 16/04/14. Pours a dark blacky red colour. Slightly off white head. a bit foamy. Nice hoppy, fruity, sticky sweet smell. Medium body, lovely mouthfeel. Slight carbonation and smooth. Lovely blanace of flavours - from sweet mango and passion fruit to bitter grapefruit. There’s some coffee bitterness there too, some choc... Well balanced. It’s very nice.

No dark malt tones at all! Truely an ipa. A really nice one as well. Aroma and taste are well balanced.

BOTTLE. Head: beige, medium-big, frothy, avg. retention. Aroma: strong citrus, grapefruit, pineapple and pine. Possibly some toasted notes. Taste: citrus, possibly dark malt, moderate bitterness. A nice, aromatic and juicy IPA. But what is Black IPA supposed to mean? I was not able to detect any serious dark malt notes. So, for the moment a Black IPA for me is an IPA that is black.
