COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Clear dark brown, tan head. Nose is floral, fruity (mainly grapefruit) hops, piney bitterness, malt. Taste begins with malty, bready hints and ends with medium fruity-hoppy bitterness with lots of pine, grapefruit and some roasty hints in the background. Prickly carbonation, thin to medium body, slightly dry finish. Crisp and refreshing.

Bottle from the Beer Hawk website. Pours a deep black colour with a decent and lasting off-white head, could be a Schwarzbier. Hoppy aroma. Crisp initial flavour, overall dominated by the hops. Pine, bitter. Don’t know what it was about this beer, liked it and enjoyed every sip but somehow didn’t love it. Maybe not as much of a kick from the dark malt as I’d hoped, maybe the hops were a little lacking in complexity. Would love to try it from a cask.

Draught at bar. Brown color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, pine, roasty flavor, a hint of smoke and grapefruit. Dry bitter finish with roasty flavor. Very nice black IPA.

Pours jet black with a nice creamy head (which stays). Aroma is smoky roast, with bitterness and floral hops. Taste is quite light, with some lasting bitterness. Alcohol taste is not present. Body is thin, but the head makes up for it. Eyes closed, you’d struggle to detect that it’s black - maybe the roast would give you a hint.

Refined Black IPA from Thornbridge, with well balanced fruity and floral hops with a rich roast of malt. Quite thin, but in keeping with the style with a nice touch of bitterness throughout.
