COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Bottle from SB cons 2012-04-30 Göteborg Ar: wee roasted malt, tropical fruits, grape fruit, pine Ap: pitch black, heavy moon rocky creme beige head F: apricots, pine, heavy grape fruit bitterness, wee burned caramel, wee soya, coffey bean shells, dark chocolate, full body, grainy, sweet and dry, finish long roasted malt, dried fruits and bitterness. O yes the lacings are super duper (can confess, my glasses are cleaned in the dishwasher with regulary washing tablets, so there are seldom any lacings to speak about bla bla bla). Thornbridge is one of the best english breweries (according to me).

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of hops, grass, pine, resin, rye, dark malt, and a hint of citrus. Poured very dark brown/ruby in color with a medium to large-sized, creamy, dense, brown head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor is medium to heavily bitter and light to medium sweet. Tastes of dark malt, hops, grass, pine, slight rye, and a hint of roasting. Medium body. Tingly, then dry texture. Average to slightly lively carbonation. Medium to heavily bitter, lightly sweet, dark malt, hop, pine, grass, slight roast finish is lightly dry.

Snyggt!

Bottle. Dark almost black with a brown nice looking head. Big aroma with pine, fresh hops, resin and some more darker things like chocolate and roasted malt. Taste well balanced and rich with lots of nice hops giving you pine, grapefruit and some spice well integrated with the darker malts bringing you dark chocolate and pumpernickel. A really good long lingering beer.

Bottle 50 cl, SB. Pours brown black with some red tones against light. Good tanned creamy head leaving lacing. Aroma is roasted, fruity, hoppy, bready, coffee, some licorice and a bit peaty. Flavor is roasted, peaty and fruity in the beginning. Middle has added soapyness, bitterness, pepper and some sweetness. Finishes with a nice bitter dry and pungent aftertaste.

50cl bottle. Pours jet black with tan/beige billowy head - plenty of thick lacing. Aroma is incredible - pineapple, grapefruit, orange peel, pine - the aroma of a pure unadulterated American IPA - such a surprise given its pitch black appearance. Taste is a great mixture of the pine and tropical flavours of an IPA and the smooth, cocoa driven, smokey, woody, dry stout-esque flavours. Great depth of flavour - excellent beer.

mansquito (3105) - Nueva York, New York, USA - APR 26, 2012
Pizzeria Paradiso, Alexandria 12oz tap ($10): Pours a black colour with a small beige head. Aroma is mostly hops, with very little of the porter aspect present. Taste is hop forward, but not brutal. The hops are more focused towards being flavourful than they are towards being straight up bitter. The roasted malts are present, but not in the 50/50 balance that many Black IPAs have; instead, the porter is very much an undertone that provides some slight differentiation to the body. I was impressed.

hopscotch (8529) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - APR 25, 2012
Draft... Midnight black ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Excellent retention. Interesting, carbonic, citrusy bouquet of charcoal and fudge intertwined with orange, grapefruit and lemon peels. Full-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Even at Florida room temperature, this baby holds on to its charred, medium bitter roots. Finishes crisp and bitter with the pleasant bitterness hanging around a good while.

Pours jet black with one finger head. Nose of roasted roasted malts and pine. Tastes of coffee, roasted malts, toast, pine, cola, and dark chocolate. Slight bitters and kinda porter like. Delicious though

Loved this beer. Full of flavour and very easy going. Hint of caramel. Could drink it all night. Need to try more from Thornbridge. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
