Imperial Russian Stout
Rich and dark with smoke, subtle peatiness and the power of the dark malts. Molasses and liquorice and chocolate goodness all wrapped up in a smooth, warming liquid. Finishes with a distinct humming bitterness carried well by the hop and malt combo.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Dark brown colour, beige foam. Medium carbonation. Aroma of roasted malts and dark chocolate, also some smoke. Medium body. Light sweet, medium bitter hoppy finish. More hoppy than malty. Decent.

Very roasty and bitter, seemingly more hop than chocolate. Dark fruit, coffee. Sounds good on paper but didn’t seem to all add up.

Disappointed does not even describe this as an experience. Whilst it looks ok in the glass and the initial aroma is of chocolate it gets to a highly hopped and then overall the whole experience is for me sour.

Bottle from Pothole (Koht’s newly opened bottle shop) in Tallinn (€ 4,40), July 2014. Pours a very dark brown, near black, with a reddish hue; the massive tan head retains extremely well, good lacing too. Nose... eeem, nose is... well, my nose is inside the friggin foam and I must say it’s enjoying the dip. It’s sweet (burnt sugar and caramel); not much chocolate or roastiness to mention. There’s also a clear clue in the nose that it’s gonna be boozy. Taste is caramelly sweet, malty, faintly chocolaty, somewhat tart, and indeed boozy, like dark plums soaked in liqueur. Full body, soft palate, very little carbonation. Finish is boozy, quite unexpectedly so for a mere (khm) 7,4% ABV, and a lot of bitterness (ca 70 IBU maybe?). Which both kind of kill off the otherwise great experience. It’s a rough and tough one.

Hmm...I love Thornbridge but not sure this is great. Dark brown and opaque - almost black- with a slight off- white head and good lacing. Get the liquorice and the peat. And the molasses more than the chocolate. Roasted malts could be in there stronger to balance these tastes off.

Pleasantly strong taste, roasted but in balance. Some hints of cream and caramel. Easy to drink, didn’t have the consistency of old motor oil as previously expected. Would drink again if I would find any!
