3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JorgeLee (770) - Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 8, 2013
Gravity at Battersea Beer Festival 2013. Very deep brown/black. A very smooth imperial stout, roasty. Hint or more than of booze. Oily and slightly silky texture. Ash at the end. A classy beer, although maybe lacking in really interesting flavours.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 spacecube (369) - Leeds, West Yorkshire, ENGLAND - FEB 6, 2013
300ml bottle at 7.4 abv. Pours almost black, with a large foam head that subsides eventually leaving a lacing. Aroma is smoked, roasty sweet caramel malts, a hint of chocolate with lots of hops, quite resiny with dried fruit, dates and raisin. Palate is quite thick, not very smooth or well balanced reallly. Sometimes seems stonger than the 7.4%. Decent but uninspiring stout.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 agent_persik (119) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - FEB 3, 2013
Dark brown almost black color with medium beige creamy head, which stays for some time. Aroma of smoked peat, dark chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is smoky as well, with coffee, pepper, licorice and wood notes. Sweet start, a bit salty but evolves into a strong and long hoppy bitter finish. Full creamy body, flat carbonation. Nice smooth and smoky stout, tasty and enjoyable.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 llamatron (2) - - FEB 1, 2013 does not count
Beer is a heavy dark brown with a faint red tinge to it at the edges when held up to the light. I bungled the pouring a bit, and ended up with a monster head that died off quickly. It thinned out quickly.
The aroma is somehow lighter than the beer, but is much the same - malty scents, a hint of licorice, possibly some fruity esters? It’s pleasant, at any rate.
The beer has a rich, smooth mouthfeel, and a lower level of hoppiness which is standard for the style of stout. There’s a rich texture and a sweet taste at first, with a mildly bitter and hoppy finish. All the roasted maltiness you’d expect is there, with a hint of spicy tastes and dark chocolate notes. The overall balance is excellent; I could drink a few of these, but I’d drink them slowly!
The beer is bottle conditioned, with a small amount of sediment in the bottom. It came in a 500ml bottle, and a 7.4% abv.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 flying_pig (635) - SCOTLAND - JAN 29, 2013
500ml bottle for £3.49 from Peckhams (Glasgow,):
Roasted malts and a sweet, burnt sugar aroma along with some coffee and chocolate. It also seems to have some darker fruits lingering in the background and overall it is a pleasant aroma that could have used being a little stronger.
Mahogany brown colour with a few red tinges in there and a huge, three fingers tall head that is a thick looking, foamy, light brown with great retention.
A strong roasted malt presence initially but what follows is a lot sweeter than I was expecting, there is a touch of coffee along with some chocolate and sugar. The dark fruits from the nose are in the taste as well and there is some licorice complimented by some caramel; a very sweet and hoppy tasting imperial stout.
Lighter than usual for the style, falling somewhere around medium bodied with mild to medium carbonation levels. There is also more sweetness to it than your usual imperial stout.
Lighter in many ways than what I was expecting, the aroma was quite subdued but not exactly weak and the body was a lot lighter too but it was an excellent beer and one that I’d probably have again. The 7.4% alcohol content was very well hidden and goes by pretty much unnoticed.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Tide (787) - Espoo, FINLAND - JAN 25, 2013
Bottle at bar. Black color, beige head. Roasty taste with coffee, chocolate, liquorice and nuts. Nicely balanced body. Roasty finish with coffee. Very nice imperial stout.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 blklab2007 (1639) - Connecticut, USA - JAN 21, 2013
Draft Gingerman pour has a black color and a covering of tan head. Aroma has earth, light peat, chocolate, and a nicely malted base. Mouth feel is medium light with good carbonation. Flavor is dusty, aged hops, peaty malt, and light bitterness. Smooths out nicely and has the peated character without dominating the beer.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 berkshirejohn (3685) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - JAN 19, 2013
50cl bottle at ABV 7.4% from Bitter Virtue, Southampton. A chocolate brown pour with a loose beige head and a cherry red glow; aroma of peat smoke and toasted malts; soft and creamy in the mouth, with a light malty body; and a dry lingering smoky finish, with some gently warming alcohol. Thinner than expected, but a fine stout.
