Imperial Russian Stout
Rich and dark with smoke, subtle peatiness and the power of the dark malts. Molasses and liquorice and chocolate goodness all wrapped up in a smooth, warming liquid. Finishes with a distinct humming bitterness carried well by the hop and malt combo.

(50 cl shared by rodenbach99. Thanks!) The look : Deep brown in color. Small head with some lacing. The nose : Balck malts, light chocolate and vanilla notes, sweet caramel, faint liquorice. The taste : Lots of roasted malts, caramel and chocolate. The mouthfeel : the body is surprisingly round with a quiet carbonation and a oily texture. The finale: Roasted bitterness with a good smack from the abv. The appreciation: Straightforward example of the style.

(draught) pours black in colour with a creamy beige head. aroma of grass, light cherries and brown sugar, with a hint of bubble gum, dark chocolate and bread dough. flavour is smoked ham, liquorice, burnt rubber and cow manure, with a hint of herbal hops, strawberries and alcohol in the light roasted-bitter finish. medium to heavy-bodied with average carbonation.

Nice pour: Black with creamy white head. Unfortunately It falls away after that. Didn’t get much on the nose. Taste: Coffee and hints of chocolate to go with the liquorice. Too much liquorice for my taste buds. I had very high expectation for this one, quite disappointed.

Bottle. Nice black colour with a big head. Aroma is dark chocolate, some sweet dark fruit, roast and peat-smoked notes. Flavour is more deep than the slightly disappointing aroma would suggest, full thickish, chocolate-malty, with a warming, very bitter, roasted and slightly earthy finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Lacks somewhat in depth but it’s still very good.

Bottle from Slowbeer. Interesting, but rough for an imperial stout. Aromas of tobacco, caramel, liquorice. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes, and long length. Syrupy, full bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

Draught. Opaque black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma of sweet chocolate, licorice, earth, bread, dried fruit, booze. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of chocolate, licorice and dried fruit. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. A bit thin but otherwise OK.

Keg at Euston Tap. Half pint. Black no head. Light body for a stout, with some vegetable water and a resinous hoppy finish. Not the best beer that this brewery has produced.

50cl Bottle brought from London, thanks Manon! ABV 7.4%. Black colour, light-beige head. Aroma is way off, the smell of Brussels sprouts mixed with tar, some salty liquorice. Flavour also has sprouts, cabbage, tar, ashy bitter hard roasted malts, hint of chocolate, chicory, very bitter finish. Medium-bodied. I can’t believe this is how it’s intended to taste, this was undrinkable. Will definitely re-rate if I have the opportunity.

Bottle, 7.4%. Mild fruity and roasted aroma, some coffee. Clear very dark brown colour. Small tight brown head. The flavour is very creamy, almost like fresh wood or vanilla to start with. Then it turns nicely roasted, some coffee. A good brew.
