Imperial Russian Stout
Rich and dark with smoke, subtle peatiness and the power of the dark malts. Molasses and liquorice and chocolate goodness all wrapped up in a smooth, warming liquid. Finishes with a distinct humming bitterness carried well by the hop and malt combo.

500ml bottle for £3.49 from Peckhams (Glasgow,):
Roasted malts and a sweet, burnt sugar aroma along with some coffee and chocolate. It also seems to have some darker fruits lingering in the background and overall it is a pleasant aroma that could have used being a little stronger.
Mahogany brown colour with a few red tinges in there and a huge, three fingers tall head that is a thick looking, foamy, light brown with great retention.
A strong roasted malt presence initially but what follows is a lot sweeter than I was expecting, there is a touch of coffee along with some chocolate and sugar. The dark fruits from the nose are in the taste as well and there is some licorice complimented by some caramel; a very sweet and hoppy tasting imperial stout.
Lighter than usual for the style, falling somewhere around medium bodied with mild to medium carbonation levels. There is also more sweetness to it than your usual imperial stout.

Lighter in many ways than what I was expecting, the aroma was quite subdued but not exactly weak and the body was a lot lighter too but it was an excellent beer and one that I’d probably have again. The 7.4% alcohol content was very well hidden and goes by pretty much unnoticed.

Taster (keg) at The Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell, on 13-Aug-2015 - Thornbridge tap takeover as part of London Beer City 2015. Clear reddish brown colour with a thick beige coloured head. Full bodied and softly carbonated. Slightly sweet aroma of berries, malt and caramel. Flavour of sweet roasted malt, caramel, chocolate and spices. Smooth and well balanced.

Bottle from Blackrock cellar. Pours deep black with little to no head. Aroma is hoppy, pine spruce, fruit, coffee background. Flavour is grass, pine with mild hop bitterness. Wood earth finish but this felt more like a black ipa. It delicious and has a lovely smooth mouthfeel but odd for an imperial Russian.

I ripped the crown off and poured. Odd. The last Imperial Russian Stout I poured was so viscous that it just about had lumps in it. This one, not so much. It even appears lighted with a definite clarity in the lower inch of the glass that looks the colour of polished mahogany. It looks the goods on top though with a covering of cream coloured head that was leaving good lace down the side of the glass. The aroma was that of salty Dutch licorice, molasses and some oakiness, also some polished leather as well. To taste there is a slick, silky mouthfeel that is gratifying. There’s mature flavours of plum, oak and leather again. Add in the odd truckload of savoury licorice and you’ve got this one down to a tee. It’s a tasty devil and not like other IRS I’ve indulged in.

Bottle 0,50L. Very dark, ruby/brown colour with large, frothy, light brown, long lasting head. Not so strong aroma of chocolate, caramel/molassaes, roasted malts and some herbs. Rich, medium bitter taste with a lot of chocolate and coffee with long lasting, bitter aftertaste. Medium body, dry texture, lively carbonation. Excellent stout.

Black color;medium-sized , beige head. Aroma of chocolate , roasted caramel , raisins . Same notes in taste . Surprisingly easy to drink , probably ,because of lower then in the average American Imperial stout ABV . However it doesn’t lose anything in palate because of that. I’d say , even goes out of the crowd.

Bottle 0,5. Dark color, small head. Complex, rich taste. Good example of imperial stout. Liked it.
