COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Bottle. Darkish brown with a large beige head. Wafty aroma of chocolate, light bread and brioche, with bitter oranges and some tropical fruit floating above. Medium bodied, slightly creamy, moderate carbonation. Leans more towards grassy and tropical fruit in the taste, but there’s still some orange. Classy pale malt and a little chocolate sit underneath. Fairly bitter a the end, with orange peel coming back into play, maybe some pine needles. Lovely beer.

Bottle: Deep, deep ruby-amber coloured, big rocky off-white head; moderate to solid bitter-sweet aroma of dark malt, dried fruits and - mainly - herbal hops with a tinge of cough syrup; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied; dried berries, caramel and spicy hops in the finish. Well balanced and complex. Great…

Bottle. Dark reddish brown beer. Fruity citrusy nose. Malty and quite dry taste. Sharp and metallic bitterness at the end. Not quite convincing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

0,5l bottle at dogstar vienna. bb 09/2016. Black colour, small coffee colored head. Smells licorice, spices, earthy, light coffee, a but old hopish. Smell is rather limited, smells a but unclean. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. Tastes of cocoa, spices, some light hops, pines, peppery, herbal, some roost, light licorice, light sweetness. Finishes nicely balanced with light bitterness and some roast notes with taste of pines and coffee. Good stuff, unfortunately does not seem to be very fresh, but at least the taste was nice. would love to try fresher..

" While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door." Clear brown pour is raven black in Ipa glass, big frothy light brown head gives sticky lacing, looks good. Sweet fruity aroma with mango and pineapple, pine, mildly roasted caramel, nice aroma. Medium body, slick feel, semisweet, slightly bitter, finish dries bit, medium carbonation. Nice one, balanced, good flavors.

Tap @ Sorbon. Very dark, clear with a small white head. Rosted notes in the aroma, cocoa, red berries and pine. Really smooth but a bit thin. Some herbal notes mixed with roasted taste and fruity taste, pineapple, orange, citrus zest, cocoa and chocolate.

Keg @The Hanging Bat, Edinburgh. Pours dark brown almost black but it has a red tinge, tan head. Nose is pine, resin, toilet cleaner (in a good way) toffee, chocolate, fruity, grapefruit and a very slight coffee. Taste is very hoppy, pine, orange, citrus fruits, malty, great. I tend not to like Black IPA’s this is wonderful.

50cl bottle on 29-Oct-2015, poured into a long stemmed tulip glass. Dark brown /black in colour with a tan coloured head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel sweetness and pine. Medium body and carbonation. Flavour heavy on roasted malt, some liqourice and hops. Dry bittersweet finish. Not a bad Black IPA, but there are many better examples out there.
