COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Bottle from Great Grog. Black pour, medium tan head. Some tropical fruit, hop resin, hint of roast malt nose. Really smooth, well-structured palate. Full, roasty malt flavours but balanced with a good dose of fruity hops. Nothing harsh though, really smooth mouthfeel and a bitter but balanced finish. Amazing stuff.

My first experience of a Black IBA, and I loved it. Beautiful balance of mocha chocolate maltiness and IPA hoppy biterness. Full bodied without being cloying, not overpowerringly bitter, full of juicy flavour. Try the first chance you get.

Opague, dark brown to black colour with a firm white head. Smells hoppy, bitter and dark fruits. Tastes bitter, hoppy and like black berries. Great carbo, full body.

UPDATED: OCT 17, 2011 fantastic! my first oxymoronic beer, but what a joy! I think I have found my new favourite style. Pours a slightly syrupy back, with a sooty tinged head. Aroma is an amazing mix of sharp cirtus and floral hops backed with a hint of raosty malt. the flavour really has so much going on, all of the above and slight vanilla, chocolate. but each flavour is complementary and it doesnít taste mucky! a lovely twang of bitterness to finish Iíll be stocking up!

Love this - itís too roasty to be a pure black IPA but the hop selection balances the roastiness perfectly. Awesome beer.

From bottle. I really wanted to like this. I tried really hard to like this but the sorachi ace hops Iím afraid are disgusting. This is a well made beer, lovely malt, good level of bitterness but man, sorachi ace is rank. Good qualities are the piney, resinous, fruity hops which come through but then thereís the distinctive cack of sorachi. Nice roasty, chocolatey malts but then bang, sorachi. Canít dig on this

@ ACBF 2011. The aroma has grass, mandarins, some malts. Dark, brown-black coloured beer with a beige head. The taste is bitter, has roast, grass and mandarins again. Medium bodied. Nice.

Pours dark black with a thick tan head. Aromas of both hops and citrus fruits, with chocolate and roasted malt supporting. The flavour had fruits, hops, chocolate and malt. Nice beer.

Bottle at hotel Bodegraven, shared with Dutchdrebus and Iluvatarmilan. Very dark brown color, full light brown head. Smell hops and bitter. Taste nicely bitter, hops, slightly roasty. Decent carbo, medium body.

Cask at Port Street Beer House 28th September 2011. Better than many of the Thornbridge range, dark and potent. Worth a try
