Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

One-third pint, hand pulled cask at B1 Seacole Bar, first day at GBBF 2011. Bright mahogany coloured body. Bubbles at the surface. Fruity chocolate to the nose. Interesting flavour, rather marmalade-like bringing dark vanilla, bitter liquorice and dried fruits. Long-lived bittersweet tail. Medium bodied. Well made. One of my best at the festival (London, 02.08.2011).

On cask at the Euston Tap. Pours beautiful black with a small consistent creamy beige head. Aroma is very fresh, hoppy, citrussy with a little bit of sour cream/dairy. Taste is initially full on hoppy bittterness, but smooths off after a couple of sips into a creamy and malty experience. Smooth and medium bodied beer. Finish is initial bitterness fade into smooth. Lovely!

Cask @ GBBF 2011. A black colored beer, with a beige head. The aroma op some chocolate with fruits and hops. The taste of a little chocolate with fruits like citrus and bitter hops. The aftertaste is very bitter with hints of sweet.

August 16, 2011 - cask at Craft Beer Co. Really deep ruby red, clear, with a solid lasting sticky-looking foamy beige head. Smells great - mostly hops, some roasty malt - C-hop and resin. Taste is surprisingly sweet (caramel) - background bitterness - and is this lightly barrel-aged? I get some peat/salt Islay character - maybe that’s the Sorachi synergizing with the three darker malts, or maybe I was just overly thirsty or having a mild stroke. Slick, average body, midly astringent and carbonated - nice mid-length bitter linger, finishes sweet and sticky .... decent, not sure it’s quite my thing - but I have had very few black IPAs I loved.

Another Thornbridge beer that makes me proud to be from Derbyshire. I have never previously tried a Black IPA as an inexperienced drinker, I found this to have a superb hoppiness and bitterness with chocolate malts really giving it something.

Bottle @ JohnMurdoch, thanks much for sharing! Dark brown colour, tan head. Nose is hoppy, roasted malts, bit of liquorice, umami. Flavour is smoky, liquorice, a bit salty, maybe a hint of chocolate, and well hopped at the same time, with hints of resin, oranges perhaps. Medium bodied. Dry and roasty finish. Intriguing beer, there’s much going on in this and still well balanced. This is really something special.

Cask @ Craft Beer Co. Pours a dark brown, with a medium fluffy off white - beige head. Nice piney hop, with roasted malt and citrus behind it. finishes quite thin though, but still a great beer.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2012 Bottles from Mybrewerytap.com, Nina’s Mini Market & Great Grog. Fruity hoppy aroma. Almost black colour, good head. Complex spicy hoppy fruity malt flavour. Smooth & well balanced. Somewhere between a porter & IPA interesting & very nice.
