Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Very subtle on the nose, but wonderfully complex on the palette. An excellent balance of malt and hop flavors, this Black IPA rocks! Similar in appearance and body to a nice porter.

Draft at Paradiso Dupont. Extremely dark brown, almost black, tan head. Aroma of charcoal (in a good way), with subtle light pine. Taste is burnt chocolate and subtle pine resin. The hops are underwhelming in this one.

Cask at Cask, Pub, and Kitchen, London. A dark amber beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, alcohol, and caramel, leading to a bitter finish.

One of the darkest beers I’ve ever seen, Raven has a lovely creamy beige head and aroma of orange peel, damp forest floors and some roasted chocolate. Tangerine in the attack with a sweet caramelised malt body and a bitter spike with the orange peel returning in the finish. Fairly heavy with thick palate, though the citrus of the hops does well to keep it sprightly. A nice enough beer in its own right but not the best black IPA.

Draught from el tigre. Super dark pour with handsome white head. Dark malt taste but the hops take over quick. Good

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2013 Cask (YES!) @ Sheffield Tap [161013]
Very dark brown, light through, dense beige head, good lacing
Aroma of citrus grapefruit, pine hops, soft roasted malts
Taste of mellow citrus grapefruit, sopft piney hops, dark roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate, smooth dark malts, floral hop notes, superb bips, this is just gorgeous
Palate - Medium body, smooth palate. Finish as main flavour, bitter citrus hops and bitter dark chocolate, not too bitter - it’s just right, so smooth
Overall - WOW better than keg by a long shot. Its a 4.3 for this - one of the best cask beers in the UK

Bottle from Tomlinson’s, Inverness [230713] 7/4/8/4/16
More grassy hops, not as citrusy, nice stout background but not as much chocolate as I remember...it’s good but not as good as I remember 4.2 down to 3.9

Bottle [060111] 8/4/9/4/17 4.2
Appearance - Black / ruby edges. Rich frothy off-white head. Aroma - pine / strong grapefruit and citrus hops, roasted malt - complex. Taste - Complex combination of strong grapefruit, citrusy hop bitterness and roasted malt with chocolate and coffee notes. Complex mix of seemingly incompatible flavours which blend beautifully. A wonderful beer, highly drinkable at the 6.6% ABV.

500ml bottle. Pours a very dark ruby brown with a large mocha head. Aroma is mild piney hops and a little coffee underneath. Taste has a little roast to start and a coffee, piney hop finish. Tasty.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2013 Gravicask (Cambridge Winter Ale Festival 2011) (7:4:7:4:14=3.6)
Fruity aroma - grapefruity and peachy, but a little dusty too. Dark brown. Tastes similar to the aroma, definitely quite sweet, and a touch sticky, but at least fresh. So sweet Phil is reminded of lemon meringue pie. If they could rein in the sweetness, this would be really good.
Rerate: 500ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn) (7:4:7:4:14+=3.6+)
Wow - just as good as tap, if not better. The bite’s still there, and the sweetness has been capped, so that it’s not so obvious. Delicious brew. Lovely go-to beer.
Should rerate cask version - bottle is rarely better than cask...

Cask at Euston Tap, London Black with a small tan head. Blackcurrant and blackberries. Flowery and herby. Fresh and rather strange. Some lilacs aswell.

Cask-conditioned at the Cask Pub And Kitchen, London 11/1/2011. Near black with a slight tan head. Aroma of tropical and grassy hops with some chocolate malts. Plenty of grapefruit and pineapple fruit flavours, which clashed to some extent with the accompanying chocolate and roasty notes. Still very enjoyable though.
