Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

In short: A very nice roasted, fruity and resinous Black IPA. Lovely
How: Tap at Blind Tiger, NYC
The look: Near black body topped by a very small ring of foam
In long: Nose is mostly fruity. The fruity hops blend with the dark malts to create a fresh dark fruits aroma. Taste is like a big fast fruity dark cake, a lot of baked fruits, bitter black coffee, burnt toasts, plenty of fruity resinous hops. I particularly enjoyed how the high roast level somehow harmoniously coexisted with the strong fruitiness, usually it is one or the other. Bitterness level is medium-high. Tasty tread. Very satisfying offering. An English brewery getting on the North-American trend of uber-hoppy Black IPAs!!?!! If they get started on dental hygiene, the Americanization of England will be complete.

Draft. Blackish beer with a light tan head. Grapefruit aroma. Caramel and grapefruit flavor with light woodsiness. Medium bodied. decent bitterness. Caramel and grapefruit linger with light woodsiness and light vanilla.

Poured a black color with a thin head. Aroma is nutty with lots of caramel. Taste also has lots of caramel with a very hoppy finish. I like the transition from malty to hoppy. The finish has molasses with the hops. Good balance. Overall a decent black IPA.

Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. Deep dark brown pour with a reserved tan head. Nose had traces of roasted malt, citrusy hop, dark chocolate and dark fruits with the flavour displaying similar traits. Pretty tasty stuff with solid hop bitterness and some nice juicy fruit all tussling for position with the malts. An interesting and characterful beer that has lots going for it it. Raven we’re raven...

On tap into tulip at Bar on Buena, Chicago. An IPA in disguise (kind of): it’s a dead ringer for a baltic porter or imperial stout in looks -- completely black, with a lasting, pillowy beige head. Roasty and burnt on the nose. Roasty and burnt on the sip, too, the dirty-dusty hop bitterness blending with the roastiness of the malts, making it taste almost smoked. Very pure and intense flavors. Creamy mouthfeel starts with the inch of foam on top, but continues in the silky body of the beer. The dryness and mix of flavors make me think of tamales and mole sauce. Any chocolate notes are devoid of sweetness. This would be a great pairing with particular types of food, perhaps brisket or some type of pulled meat in a mesquite sauce. Or maybe tamales and mole sauce.

Draft at Bangers & Lace. Pretty cool to try another Thornbridge beer. Pours a brownish black, pretty translucent. Nice looking. Offwhite head. Nose is American and citrus, some faint roast and resin. On taste, nice level of bitterness and minimal sweetness. A hint of roast peeks in as well reminding you that it’s black. Finishes quite dry with a great hop flavor. Pretty damn good beer.

/12/11/12//11

Super dark mahogany, with a light tan head... Roasted malt, caramel, hop, really like it... Taste is just plain weird, not a fan of it all, toasted bread

Draft at Rustico. Poured a dark, almost black color with a off-white head. Aroma was pine, grapefruit/citrus tartness in the hop character. Taste was notes of roasted malts (chocolate, touch of coffee bitter), with a huge wallop of citrus hops. Very drinkable and enjoyable.
