4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught, The Sheffield Tap, Sheffield. Opaque black, intense pine resin aroma. Some fruit, cherry and prune, but predominated by hop resin. Thick, syrupy, with noticeable alcohol and the bitter sweet battling it out. Long alcohol hop burn on the finish. Great.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: OCT 29, 2012 Re-rating, this time showing a hint of red amongst the dark colour - nice head. The nose has grapefruit zest, then some orange coming through. maybe rosewater too. The taste has bitter Seville oranges and not much sign of the chocolate. The palate is slightly big on the alcohol but apart from that, it delivers. Overall, good beer but not sure it delivers all the characteristics (that is chocolate) of a black IPA.

50cl bottle @ Brauhaus. Pours opaque with a slim head. The nose has pine and grapefruit. The taste has creamy grapefruit. The palate is medium bodied and textured with a nice clean finish - well balanced. Overall, a good beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Attractive black body with a light, off-white head. The nose complex. It’s a bit peppery, with the malts lending sweet chocolate coffee, balanced out by grassy hops. The sweet flavors really lay a nice foundation for the dry hoppiness to show off on. This is a smooth pint, the body’s medium. The carbonation is nicely understated. Another great Thornbridge beer.

Cask at GBBF 2011. Dark brown to black color. The aromas and flavors of chocolate, toffee, lemony and peppery hops. Firm smooth bitterness. Smooth firm taste. This is not my favorite style, but this is one of the best in this style.

Bottle from Great Grog. Pours a very dark brown colour with a red tinge. The thick, light tan head last for ages. Lovely pine hop aroma with some bubblegum, peach, roasty espresso coffee and black malt. Similar upfront pine flavour with a long roasty malt and espresso coffee linger. Alcohol is quite present with a nice warming glow. Moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Nicely bitter. Great balance between hops and malt. One of my favourite Black IPA’s to date. Delicious!

Cask at the GBBF. Near black with a small off-white head. Aroma of citrus hops, especially grapefruit and lime, with sweet floral notes. Sweet citrus and fruity flavour with toffee in the background.

Bottle, Rehills, Ncl. Yep. the big 5. This is a stunning beer, no other word for it. Huge beautiful hoppy aroma, amazing concoction of flavours dance all over my tongue, grassy fresh hops, berries, cherries, sweetness, bitterness, just everything I want froma a beer and then some. I want to put down more, but I don’t think there’s enough superlatives. Wish I’d bought the entire stock from the shop.....

Bottle from Great Grog. Black pour, medium tan head. Some tropical fruit, hop resin, hint of roast malt nose. Really smooth, well-structured palate. Full, roasty malt flavours but balanced with a good dose of fruity hops. Nothing harsh though, really smooth mouthfeel and a bitter but balanced finish. Amazing stuff.

My first experience of a Black IBA, and I loved it. Beautiful balance of mocha chocolate maltiness and IPA hoppy biterness. Full bodied without being cloying, not overpowerringly bitter, full of juicy flavour. Try the first chance you get.

Opague, dark brown to black colour with a firm white head. Smells hoppy, bitter and dark fruits. Tastes bitter, hoppy and like black berries. Great carbo, full body.
