Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

[500ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Pours very black with a slightly off-white head. Roasty chocolate aromas but plenty of fruity hop on the nose. Quite sweet on the taste initially before the roast arrives. Decent amount of orangey fruit on the palate before the roasted, dry tobacco finish. Really nice - quite malty for a black IPA (compared to others I’ve had), the Sorachi Ace add an unusual element. Another great new addition to their bottled lineup [25092011]

500ml bottle. Strong resinous aroma with a creamy, beige head. Thick, dark colour. Taste is creamy and slightly bitter, with a hoppy sweetness and a dark (80-100%) dark chocolate taste. Carbonation minimal and with a thick texture. A very nice Black IPA, one to savour on a cold evening, with a bowl of freshly roasted chestnuts.

Hand pulled at the Waggon and Horses, Halesowen. Red/black appearance. A licorice, blackcurrant finish. Slightly uncertain in the mouth - some dry grain, some flat sweetness. Any sense of blackness is only really present towards the finish. Very nice, but more watery and less rich than I hoped for.

Pours black with brownish edges, beige head and good retention. Aroma is coffee, resin, and grapefruit. Taste is coffee, pine, a hint of chocolate, grapefruit, and a "faux oakiness" from the Sorachi Ace hops. Body is light to medium, creamy, below averagge carbonation, and a roasty bitter finish. Overall, a great lighter bodied black IPA with balanced hopiness and roastiness. Very clean tasting as with all Thornbridge products I’ve sampled to date.

Deep brown/black pour. Resiny and piny with a lot of citrus and fruit. A bit of fruit and some tobacco and licorice. Really dank with a lot of zestiness underlying it. Dark malts with a little bit of chocolate flavour as well. A pretty bang-on black IPA. It really works in the cask.

One-third pint, hand pulled cask at B1 Seacole Bar, first day at GBBF 2011. Bright mahogany coloured body. Bubbles at the surface. Fruity chocolate to the nose. Interesting flavour, rather marmalade-like bringing dark vanilla, bitter liquorice and dried fruits. Long-lived bittersweet tail. Medium bodied. Well made. One of my best at the festival (London, 02.08.2011).

On cask at the Euston Tap. Pours beautiful black with a small consistent creamy beige head. Aroma is very fresh, hoppy, citrussy with a little bit of sour cream/dairy. Taste is initially full on hoppy bittterness, but smooths off after a couple of sips into a creamy and malty experience. Smooth and medium bodied beer. Finish is initial bitterness fade into smooth. Lovely!

Cask @ GBBF 2011. A black colored beer, with a beige head. The aroma op some chocolate with fruits and hops. The taste of a little chocolate with fruits like citrus and bitter hops. The aftertaste is very bitter with hints of sweet.
