Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Pours almost stout-like with a stiff brownish head. Taste has burnt coffee followed immediately by the hops. God, I love this brewery...

Draft into a growler from the Birch Bar. Deep brown/black with a tan head that laces quite well. The aroma is interesting ... hinting at northwest American hoppiness. This drinks with a unique blend of British porter base, with a pacific hoppiness kick. Turns out to be quite pleasant. (#4555, 3/31/2012)

50 cl bottle from Systembolaget. Deep brown, clear liquid with mahogany and ruby hue with medium to big, thick light tan head. Aroma of pine, citrus, grass, fresh hops, coffee, roasted malt and light tropical fruit. Some light dill from the Sorachi hops, but thankfully not too much. Taste is light dry, medium to high bitter and has notes of fresh hops and roasted barley. Medium bodied with a bit light carbonation. Modern, hoppy BIPA from the (often) conservative UK, which is nice to see. Though, I would prefer some other hop than Sorachi Ace.

From notes. First reviewed 8/21/2011. Served on tap in a tulip at Bad Apple. My tulip arrives filled with a mahogany liquid with brown edges and a burgundy tint. A cherry tan foam sits on top, fading to a ring and an island after a few moments. A little bit of nice lace sticks to the glass. Full, robust chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt pair well with grassy, some pine, and a bit of grapefruit hop aroma. The flavor starts with some chocolate, full roasted malt, and a bit of coffee. The bitterness turns hoppy with some strong grassy notes, bits of tingly spruce, and a touch of grapefruit. The finish has a moderate lingering bitterness. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and creamy carbonation really set this off. It has smooth stouts jealous with envy. Medium / full body, slightly sticky, and a bit tingly about midway through each sip. This is the best American Black Ale I have had. The creamy mouthfeel really pushes this over the top for me, and the flavors blend so well together. No idea if or when I will see this beer again, but I would definitely go for it.
