COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

BOTTLE. Head: beige, medium-big, frothy, avg. retention. Aroma: strong citrus, grapefruit, pineapple and pine. Possibly some toasted notes. Taste: citrus, possibly dark malt, moderate bitterness. A nice, aromatic and juicy IPA. But what is Black IPA supposed to mean? I was not able to detect any serious dark malt notes. So, for the moment a Black IPA for me is an IPA that is black.

50 cl bottle from Špunka in Tallinn (€ 3.67). BB 15.10.2015. Pours dark - appears black in the glass with a dark chestnut hue. Head is light beige and quite big, with great retention and lacing. Aroma is musky, resinous and grassy hops, also tangerines, pineapple and orange peel, pungent, almost a cat pee note, and only a hint of roastiness in the background. It simultaneously irritates and seduces, courtesy of the Sorachi Ace I reckon. Taste is intense piney hop bitterness, with a roasty malt character joining in a few moments, finishing with satisfying lingering bitterness coupled with a dry roasty mouthfeel. Not getting any chocolate. Powerfully hopped yet beautifully balanced. Body maybe slightly less than medium, carbonation nearing flat, palate very soft and smooth. Overall a very nice brew.

Backlog rating. Keg at The Gun Docklands, part of Winter Beer Fest 2014, London. It pours a deep brown, almost black, color with a medium light brown head. Lasting foam. Aroma is slightly roasted with big hoppy notes. Pin and resin above all. In the mouth it’s smooth as silk with notes of toasted malts, licorice and caramel. Some citrussy and wood as well. Soft carbonation. Overall, good BIPA

Nice hoppy IPA with a roasted malt body. The bitterness and the body aftertaste harmonizes not bad, but a bit more balance in the malt-bitterness part might be beneficial.

Bottle, 500 ml from Pivoljub, Ljubljana. Pours black with lasting white head. Fruity hoppy and bit roasted aroma. Caramel, roasted malts, hops with bitteer finish. Good one.

Roast and some light citrus. Good product here that holds up well on cask as Thornbridge’s stuff usually does. Dark brown pour with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish. Light caramel. Cask at Churchkey.

Clear dark brown color, almost black. Small tan head. Fruity hops, a bit of roastiess. Well balanced, bitter enough but not too much, a bit coffee and orange, some sweetness. Thin to medium body, creamy texture, but lively carbonation was small disappointment. Medium long coffee and hoppy finish. Very interesting, really enjoyed this one.
(Pivoljub 0,5l bottle)
