Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Pours a lovely black beer with a solid light brown head that remains until the last sip. The hops come threw on the nose but not half as much as in the taste. My guess would be some NZ hops, not too bitter, leaving a citrusy tangy finish. Described as a black IPA, but could equally be a hoppy porter, either way a good beer worth looking out for.

Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. Pours nearly black with a huge frothy head. The aroma features a combination of roasted malts and hops: notes of coffee and chocolate from the former, a touch of citrus and pine from the latter - as rich as this style can and should be. Taste is strong in both roasty and hoppy areas: bitterness reaches formidable levels but a strong malt backbone is able to support - overall quite balanced despite intense flavours. The palate is medium to full bodied, creamy in texture. Simply excellent.

Pullo @ BOTW/Alko. Kaatuu snifteriin syvän mustana, pysyvällä ja vahvaa pitsiä jättävällä 2,5 sormen paksuisella vaahdolla. Tuoksussa pääosassa ovat raikkaat havumetsän aromit, lähinnä havua. Alla kuitenkin tuntuu melko vahvana kahvinen paahteisuus ja makeampi suklaa. Trooppisempaa hedelmääkin sekoittuu paahteen joukkoon, mutta ain hieman. Tasapainoisen oloinen tuoksun persuteella. Suutuntuma on kuitenkin hieman liian köykäinen tiputtaen kokonaisvaikutelmaa hieman.

Aroma of fruity hops and coffee on the nose, well balanced and intriguing. Has a fine creamy head and a burgundy-black body. Flavour is nice soft coffee notes with fruity hop hints. Nice on the mouth and refreshing. It’s well balanced and highly drinkable.

Full aroma. Black berries, hay, pine and roasted malts. Dark brown, almost black withca big foamy off white head. Big round full flavours. Dry from the roasted malts. Coffee, chocolate, nits, black and red berries. Aftertaste from round malts and nits evolving in bitter and then coffee and berries. Interesting!

500ml bottle bb06/2016 hauled from Sheffield by D&M up to the P-Worm, ta! (DK telt). - a tad less expressive and contained in aroma than in taste, this easygoing BIPA is a masterwork of balanced layers and drinkability. Nose of candied orange peel, rose petal, passion fruit peel, zesty marmelade, mild dark chocolate. The extravagant exotic hop mix makes for some great unsuspected flavours, ranging from grape jelly to passion fruit mousse, kiwi and grapefruit, while the piney C-hops glaze the chocolate malts with an elegant bitter cloak. Just the right strength, although maybe the bouquet might even come out a tad more expressive at +7%.

A superior black IPA. Roasted aroma complements the chocolate and pine character.
