COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottles; semi-regular.
Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Beige foamy full lasting head. Black colour. Aroma is malty, fruity (pineapple with light peach and apple) with pine notes. Flavor is malty too, fruity (grapefruit) with light dark chocolate tones, ending in a long moderately hoppy finish, slightly chocolaty. Medium bodied.

6.6% ABV. Black IPA. No head. Nose is full of aroma hops. Friendly with grape, pine, tangerine and ripe limes, all riding on a nice velvety smooth malty nose. It just feels comforting, like a soft fleece blanket or the caress of an old love. First mouthful is full of toasted barley. Medium carbonation. Flavor notes reminiscent of smoking hickory chips. Nice gentle slide into a well balanced medium bitter finish. A well balanced and carefully restrained brew with some really high quality bitter hops to keep clean the palate off after and prepare it for the next mouthful. Not cloying The toasty flavor notes are not harsh and on the palate are closer to darkly browned toast, a hairs breadth from the strident, unpleasant and cloying burnt toast that you get with some black IPAs, st0uts and porters.

From bottle. Strong aroma of dark chocolate, dried fruit and brown sugar. Slightly weaker taste of dried fruits, chocolate and bitterness, although still complex. Very dry aftertaste of dried fruit and bitter chocolate. Sorachi hops come through strongly from beginning to end. Easy to drink for its style.

Light-bodied with decent hop complexity balanced by a chocolate malt backbone. Mild bitterness, and the hops are mainly grassy. I can’t really detect the Nelson Sauvin hop influence. The beer has a dense, tan head which tends to form a clump in the center of the glass, making the beer look like a root beer float. Pretty solid overall.

Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Big beige head. Almost black with a ruby shine. Aroma is lovely black hoppy tones. Fruity, flowers, roast, sweets, hint of sweet liquorice, typical hop fruit... Nice! Flavours of roast, hops, bitters, hop fruits, some liquorice, some hop flowers, light sweet, hint of mocha and butter with a malty caramel edge. Aftertaste is hoppy, roast, bitter, some herbs. Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, more than just medium bodied and a light creamy texture. Nice stuff!

Almost black beer with a huge creamy head. Fresh hoppy aroma. Taste is very bitter, malty and fresh. Balanced but quite the bitter experience. Good one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a black beer with a medium fine stable beige head. Smells fresh hops, citrus, exotic fruit, pine, really great nose! Tastes bitter, nice mixture between malt bitter and hop bitter. Very full mouthed beer with low carbonation and no alcoholic feel. They really made a great balance between the hops and the black malts!
