Aarleks (400), Sydney, Australia Feb 4, 2007 Bottle (Sydney Summer Gathering 2007): I should say that I’m a card-holding Thorogoods Fan Club member. I really do love some of their stuff. This was clear gold and still in the glass, as is their style. Things ffell down for me in the aroma - medicinal notes, industrial solvent and some poison. Thankfully the flavout made up some ground but too much had gone wrong to totally correct; sweet apples with some fusel alcohols and lots of tannins in front of the teeth. A little harsh but with a nice tartness.
bridge (659), Sydney, Australia Sep 13, 2007 Nice solid cider from a great cidermaker, but nothing to crow about. Seemed a bit restrained, making it quite an easy quaffer. I guess it probably is more in the mould of a smooth wine, but I probably expected more. It showed some tartness and funk in there though. highlandlad (1184), Sydney, Australia Feb 1, 2007 Approached this with some reservations, given that it’s the ’sweet’ cousin of Thorogoods pretty-bloody-sweet medium cider. However, the concerns were unfounded as this shows more restraint than many commercial sweet ciders. Unremarkable clear filtered gold with some legs and no obvious carbonation. Quite a mild, clean aroma with limey apple notes and a whiff of paraffin. Slick, soft mouthfeel. Agreeably sweet with some winey chardonnay notes amid the cider apples. Bit of oak in a tart finish. A nice easy summer sipper but not as distinctive as others in the range. (750ml bottle at the Sydney RateBeer Jan 07 gathering) Linc (736), Sydney, Australia Jan 27, 2007 Clear and clean. Semi sweet, relatively well balanced and quite soft on the palate which makes for easy drinking. Not much oak there, just evident as the mildest of astringency. mullet (763), Melbourne, Australia Feb 26, 2005 Looks the same as the others - clear, yellow, still. This one was a touch too sweet for my oh-so-sophisticated palate. The intensity of the sweetness isn’t really that high but it’s kind of all-pervasive, sneaking into every corner of your mouth. Quite fruity with a fair bit of tangy acidity, though perhaps not quite enough to balance the sweetness. A bit of oak with quite a salty finish. It’s nice, but not up to the standard of some of their other stuff. I wonder if this is just the Medium Scrumpy aged for a while...
