COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The India Pale Ale was born when handfuls of fresh hops were added to barrels to preserve beer quality when shipping from England to colonial India. It is the same generous addition of hops that allow the Three Boys IPA to survive the long haul, but when drunk fresh you ca really appreciate the aroma our special selection of NZ hops creates.

Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a deep copper with a frothy white head. Really dark colour for an ipa. Nose is light resin, citrus and grassy tones. Taste is more resinous citrus hops and toffee notes. More toast malts coming through with a dry finish. Decent quaffer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The head is good, the body orange-brown. It smells hoparomtic, bit bitter, malty, creamy. The taste is hop-aromatic, fruity, bit fowery, maltaroamtic, intensive. Good

Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has citrus mainly. Clear, copper coloured with an off-white head. The taste is bitter, has citrus, some veggie tones, some strawberry, light resiny. Very dry finish.

Pours orange golden with off white head. Nutty and slight hoppy floral aroma. Medium bodied sweet malt with extreme bitter base. Nutty aftertaste

A borderline session IPA - which is pretty unusual. Taste is different too - neither better or worse - just different. Iíd have another - no question.

Aroma is pretty much all malt for me. Just the slightest, and I mean VERY slight, hint of grass where the malt curls up at the edges, but thatís it. Taste: If this was billed as a lager, Iíd be rating it highly, it has a nice sweet but not sticky malt and an unobtrusive bitterness with just a touch of citrus and a wee drop of sourness on a thin watery and refreshing body. Nice lager. And, as they say in the Parrot Sketch, "Beautiful plumage! (Nice lacing)"

rather sweet ipa, flavour of almost caramelised sugar there. also the typical light citrus, mild hop bitterness...well balanced and well rounded overall. easy drinking stuff.

From mediocre to excellent, this is the trajectory of my impression: As soon as the crown pops up, we get this aroma of lager, which is a bit of a disappointment. Soon it turns into floral hops, not too strong, kind of masked by malts, but interesting. Only later I get the pleasant suggestion of ice wine (please donít tell me to point the type of hops), but not enough to get me all over the place. Great appearance, with an interesting generous head. Amber colour, clear, but not too bright, for a subtle grayish tone hides behind the exhuberance. Iíd like to see a cloudier IPA. But the flavour...that is just PERFECTLY balanced. Not too sweet, a touch of hoppy bitterness, and the hops do come up with the finish. English IPAs would be great if they were all like this, Unfortunately this excellent beer will often be judged in comparrison with West-Coast IPAs, which are to a certain extend, an aberration on the style. I like this beer and it does what other beers from Three Boys do: it delivers what it promises to do.
