Doctors once prescribed stout as a revitalising tonic, while brewers enhanced their potency with additional ingredients, like oysters, which had desirable properties of their own. The Three Boys Oyster Stout contains select malt and hops to produce a beer that is rich and complex. And, who knows, our addition of genuine Bluff oysters to this very special brew might be just what the doctor ordered.

500 ml bottle. Aroma has burnt coffee/caramel roasted malt also burnt nut like over roasted chestnuts. Pours black with tan head that doesn’t last long. Initial taste is heavy, full and complex. Hard to distinguish and pick flavours. Is acidic and settles around the whole mouth.

Best Stout in New Zealand! Rich and dark with lots of malt flavour. Beautifully balanced bitternes/sweetness with just a hint of saltyness from the Oysters.

Tap at Tap Haus. Pours dark brown with a small, firm beige head. Sweet roasted malts with slight cocoa. You can tell the oysters are there. Light milk chocolate and lingering roasted and chocolate malts. A sweetness comes through from the oysters with a slight bitterness of coffee. Nice one

Nose: roast, choc, almost islay peaty iodine, smoke. Taste creamy coffee, chocolate notes, great seaweed smokey islay taste, does trigger oyster sensation! Quite an amazing experience. Nice brisk roast/hop bitterness in the end.

One of my favourites, and this year’s batch is just as good. Dry, roasty, almost savoury. Black as night with a lovely tan head. On handpump at Hashigo Zake and as close to perfection as I can imagine. Awesomely quaffable.

Heavy Malt. Burt Coffee, Molasses, Toffee, Chocolate. Flowers, Perfume, Pine. Brine. I enjoyed less oyster taste this batch. Oil/Cream texture. Bitter finish. This is a Kiwi classic.

Good looking pour that’s black with dark amber edges. Mild aroams of toffee, sweet raisins and vanilla. Smooth and similar to taste, very easy in the mouth and a little taste of the sea. Pleasant hops in the finish of this very nice stout.

500ml bottle. Very dark brown - black hue with an impressive large dense foamy dark tan head which slowly diminishes to an espresso crema style head, very good lacing. Bursts with interesting aromas - dark chocolate, coffee, Vegemite, burnt malt, molasses, liquorice, leather, vanilla, seaweed...Yummmy. Tastes moderately sweet and bitter, faint salinity and umami, moderate to long duration. Medium to full bodied, oily velvety texture, soft carbonation, long semi-dry finish with slight astringency. Great stuff.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2014 Bottle. Black with red tinges. Light tan head that fades a fair bit. Aroma of dark toffee, roasted malt, plums, mocha, what seems like licorice and iodine until you taste. Quite a lot of burnt flavours upfront, with just a little sweetness behind. Didn’t smell like oysters, but you can taste them, or at least their liquor - there’s a bit of gritty brininess running right through to the finish. Not as much as the very full-on Scheldebrouwerij Oesterstout, but it’s there in spades and nicely integrated. Very good balance and weight. Excellent. [3.9]

Head lingers a little longer. Rich without much sweetness, quite roasty, dark berries, minerally bitter finish.
