3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled from a 500mL bottle. Almost black, with a decent tan head. This beer has moderate chocolate and burnt malt aroma. It tastes similar also, with a long finish. The burnt malts slightly dominate the chocolate. Slightly one dimensional for my liking, and perhaps a bit thin for a stout. Typical light stout carbonation. This beer seems to get good reviews, so I might revisit at a later date. But for now, it seemed just average to me.

Honestly I feel bereft of an experience. Buy this, please, but not because you’re edgy or cutting edge, but you’re either a total fanboy or lacking in adventure.
Its really isn’t bad, I might have my expectation set high, but on my own scale of things this didn’t get to that bar.

4.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: JUN 20, 2013 Re-rated, added more points to this gorgeous stout. Thick, oily and salty. Black and greasy, with a furry brown head, like a New Zealand fur seal. Thanks Goodness there’s not much of an aroma (like a fur seal’s) - and that is probably the weakest point - quite restricted to chocolates and plums, but once you taste it, it hits you with a sharp edge, like an oystershell. Such a pungent flavour, like a Russian Imperial Stout, strong, resinous, acidic and alcoholic. You do get a hint of chocolate but it’s mostly obverwhelmed by sweet charred flavours, and the full-bodied beer has a chalky texture, as an oystershell would. The finish is broad, with bitterness and saltiness taking over any sweet intentions. Great stout, delivering the promise of brine and stoutness. Re-rating here: Oh yes, and Bluff Oysters are Ostrea chilensis.

Jet black, looks amazing, with great legs in the glass. Beautifully balanced stout, very subtle saltiness. Really enjoyed this!

A rich looking dark stout that is very easy to drink. Not overly complex and lacks viscosity, but a solid stout.

Bottle (500ml). Near jet black pour with a medium beige head. Good stout aromas (roasted nutty mocha with dark fruit hints). Lovely smooth palate with bittersweet flavours and a nice dry bitter hop finish. Medium to full body. A superior Antipodean stout but I didn’t get any the advertised oyster notes on the tongue.

Bottle at St Clair. Pours black with an off-white head. Sweet and malty with aromas of caramel and toasted malts. Also hints of dried fruits. No band-aid... nice. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Medium to soft carbonation.

500 ml bottle. Aroma has burnt coffee/caramel roasted malt also burnt nut like over roasted chestnuts. Pours black with tan head that doesn’t last long. Initial taste is heavy, full and complex. Hard to distinguish and pick flavours. Is acidic and settles around the whole mouth.
