Doctors once prescribed stout as a revitalising tonic, while brewers enhanced their potency with additional ingredients, like oysters, which had desirable properties of their own. The Three Boys Oyster Stout contains select malt and hops to produce a beer that is rich and complex. And, who knows, our addition of genuine Bluff oysters to this very special brew might be just what the doctor ordered.

On tap @ Brew Craft Beer Pub, Rotorua. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has roasted malts mainly, hint of fruitiness. Black coloured beer with a beige head. The taste is slightly bitter, has roasted malts, coffee, some dark fruits. Fairly clean. Nice.

The head is robust, the body black. It smells a bit roasty, stony, malty. The taste is roasty, bit oyster, natural, stoney. The aftertaste is oyster, bitter, roasty. Ok but I expected more.

Pitch black poor. Roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Flavour is much the same just a slight burntness. Nice bitterness to this stout. No oyster or weirded and wonderful flavours. Little disappointed by that but the stout was pretty nice regardless.

Very smooth, sweet, burnt, roasted, warm finish. Too polite to be outstanding.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2014 Initial experience (on tap) was a dissapointment. Subsequent ones (from bottles) have impressed. A rich/full bodied beer that covers all bases well. Probably even better than my rating would indicate...

roasted coffee beans, malt and bitter cocoa, with perhaps a little saltiness (or is the name just putting things in my mind?) finishes with a lasting charred bitterness, and while there’s a little sweet chocolate as it warms up it’s very background stuff. quite delicious really.

Dark ruby brown with cola, sweet berry and cocoa on the nose. Thick bod, rich and smooth with roast coffee, dark chocolate and slight barley in the long finish.

Sampled from a 500mL bottle. Almost black, with a decent tan head. This beer has moderate chocolate and burnt malt aroma. It tastes similar also, with a long finish. The burnt malts slightly dominate the chocolate. Slightly one dimensional for my liking, and perhaps a bit thin for a stout. Typical light stout carbonation. This beer seems to get good reviews, so I might revisit at a later date. But for now, it seemed just average to me.
