Doctors once prescribed stout as a revitalising tonic, while brewers enhanced their potency with additional ingredients, like oysters, which had desirable properties of their own. The Three Boys Oyster Stout contains select malt and hops to produce a beer that is rich and complex. And, who knows, our addition of genuine Bluff oysters to this very special brew might be just what the doctor ordered.

Sampled from a 500mL bottle. Almost black, with a decent tan head. This beer has moderate chocolate and burnt malt aroma. It tastes similar also, with a long finish. The burnt malts slightly dominate the chocolate. Slightly one dimensional for my liking, and perhaps a bit thin for a stout. Typical light stout carbonation. This beer seems to get good reviews, so I might revisit at a later date. But for now, it seemed just average to me.

Bottle. Black with a medium head. Creamy and smooth with some maltiness. A classy so easy to drink stout.

Had this on draught six months ago at Hare & Billett, London, and my missus just bought me four bottles for Xmas because I’m still going on about it. Time often tricks the mind, but I was right - spectacular. It’s complex and sets off all of your mouth at different times - sweet, then salty, then malty. Looks brilliant too. It’s my birthday soon, love.

Keg at the Craven Arms; dark opaque brown pour with a thin tan head, chocolate and roast malt aroma, taste has rich chocolate, hint of coffee, bold malt character, very good.

Bottle shared at the Ale House, Chelmsford. Pours close to black with a tan head. Moderate aroma of coffee, chocolate, malt, and sea-salt. Medium sweetness and bitterness, with a light saltiness. Medium+ body, slick texture, soft carbonation. The oyster comes through the more you get through it. Decent if a little less spectacular than had been hoped.

Pours like engine oil. Very dark brown with a thick, foaming beige head. Aroma of dried fruit and dark chocolate. Taste starts dry with notes of cigar ash, coffee and chocolate. Fruit flavours follow with hints of vine fruits, port and brandy. Good dry finish. A lovely, complex beer. Highly drinkable.

Oh, this is the business!

Bottle, Ale House, Chelmsford Deep chocolate colour. Nice lacing. Really classic English notes. I found it a bit too dry and a bit too thin. The oysters and sea water notes combined with the porter well. Good for the style.

Keg at the Hare and Billet, Blackheath. Black pour with a beige head. Raisin, coffee and chocolate aroma. Flavours of chocolate raisin and coffee leading to a sweet malt finish. Good stuff.

Keg@Hare and Billet, Blackheath, London - pours black with persistent beige head and lacing. Both sweet and roasted malty aroma and taste, with big chocolate, some coffee, caramel, some vanilla stokes in here as well, roasted finish. Beautiful.

Bottle shared by Casper @ De Bierbrigadier Eindhoven. Thanks for sharing Casper! Opaque very dark brown to black color, medium to full sized beige head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma is malts, some roast, lightly earthy, liquorice. Taste malts, dark malts, earthy, liquorice again and a slight touch of hops. Decent body, a bit fizzy carbonation.
