Doctors once prescribed stout as a revitalising tonic, while brewers enhanced their potency with additional ingredients, like oysters, which had desirable properties of their own. The Three Boys Oyster Stout contains select malt and hops to produce a beer that is rich and complex. And, who knows, our addition of genuine Bluff oysters to this very special brew might be just what the doctor ordered.

Sampled from a 500mL bottle. Almost black, with a decent tan head. This beer has moderate chocolate and burnt malt aroma. It tastes similar also, with a long finish. The burnt malts slightly dominate the chocolate. Slightly one dimensional for my liking, and perhaps a bit thin for a stout. Typical light stout carbonation. This beer seems to get good reviews, so I might revisit at a later date. But for now, it seemed just average to me.

Keg at the Hare and Billet, Blackheath. Black pour with a beige head. Raisin, coffee and chocolate aroma. Flavours of chocolate raisin and coffee leading to a sweet malt finish. Good stuff.

Keg@Hare and Billet, Blackheath, London - pours black with persistent beige head and lacing. Both sweet and roasted malty aroma and taste, with big chocolate, some coffee, caramel, some vanilla stokes in here as well, roasted finish. Beautiful.

Bottle shared by Casper @ De Bierbrigadier Eindhoven. Thanks for sharing Casper! Opaque very dark brown to black color, medium to full sized beige head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma is malts, some roast, lightly earthy, liquorice. Taste malts, dark malts, earthy, liquorice again and a slight touch of hops. Decent body, a bit fizzy carbonation.

Bottle, kindly provided by Cantabrian. Chocolate liqueur, vanilla, pumpernikel bread and a salty note even in the aroma. Top quality dark chocolate flavour, creamy mouthfeel and a finish reminiscent of subtly bitter, light salted coffee. Absolutely delicious!

I’m really going off stout. This one tries too much and ends up like a mardi gras float at the farmer’s field day. Caramel and chocolate. Confused.

Black pour with slight head. This stout has a bitter, crisp flavor with hints of biscuit. All right, but not my go to NZ stout.

Bottle from ballantynes, christchurch. Black color, on of the biggest brown heads ever seen. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, licorice. High co2, roasty, coffee, balanced. Nice stout, but the head is getting over the glass when poured.

Tap at Craft Beer Rising (London, 19 February 2015) Black with thin coffee brown rims and a head of coffee brown foam. The nose shows a briny oyster background with notes of dark chocolate and latte. The palate shows a slight tartness. Medium bodied & carbonation. Very smooth with flavors of dark chocolate and espresso and once again, the briny oyster constantly in the background. These flavors blend together harmoniously. Very clean espresso finish. All flavors are balanced, clean, and clear.
