Three Boys Pilsner is a taste of Europe with a new world twist. Like the pilsners of old, it balances pale malt flavour and saaz hop bitterness. The Three Boys take it a step further using modern varieties of saaz hops grown in New Zealand, which give it that little bit extra aroma and flavour.

Bottled. A golden beer with a lazing white head. The aroma has notes of hops, grass, and hay. The flavor is sweet malty combined with notes of hay and grass, leading to a bitter finish.

(Bottle 50 cl) Hazy, pale golden with a small, white head. Very fresh aroma of fruit and summer flowers. Quite a solid, malty body with a good malt sweetness before a very solid hop bitterness with loads of aroma hops and fresh flower notes. Yet another example to show that capable New Zealand micros can brew excellent pilseners with locally grown hops. 040208

Keg at the CP&K, 17/03/15. Clear golden blonde with a well presented white cap that stays for the show. Nose is cereal, pale malts, bread dough, straw, lemon zest. Taste comprises bread dough, fresh pastry, vanilla essence, sweet tones. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light grassy bitterness in the close. Decent clean pils.

500ml bottle - brought at great expense by Oliveer from work - thanks!
5 Fairly standard non-gimicky craft lager aroma, light sweet grains and some fruitiness in the hops.
2+ Typical lager colour, but with a nice persistent tight white head.
5 Very bitter taste, packed full of bitter hops, but quite papery.
3 Soft palate, pleasant carbonation. Finish starts a little sweet and fruity, but gets bitterer every second.
9 A little too much like a simple lager with amplified bitter hoppiness, but losing a bit of balance.

A quiet, hoppy and clean Pilsner with notes of sulfur, grass, herbs, spice / pepper, leafy greens, small touch of celery seed, that’s the Saaz for sure. Malt is a tad crude, cereal-like and grainy. Light body, creamy carbonation but peaked mouth feel that could use more firmness and presence. The Saaz are nice, there’s no obvious defects, t’s well-made and spicy and a little green. Not a game changer but altogether solid stuff. From draft at Andrew Andrew in Auckland.

Bottle. Pours a clear brassy golden with a large frothy white head that leaves lace all the way. Fragrant flowery citrus rind aroma with underlying clean grains. Crisp grainy palate, perfumey lemon hoppiness, and a striking dry bitter finish. An excellent pilsener, true to style, delicious.

lovely saazy hop nose with a strong toasted malt character. Very restrained bitterness, dry finish. Fairly nice for what it is.
