Such was the popularity of porter in old England that legend has it townsfolk drowned when vats at a local brewery burst, flooding the streets. The Three Boys recreate this legendary beer, balancing toasted malts to give a rich, complex flavour. Fuggles hops maintain tradition while select New Zealand hops add spiciness that carries this beer into the new world.

Pours dark brown with thin tan head. Dark chocolate and roasted malt aromas, with a hint of yeast. The flavours are smooth and rich. Roasted malt dominate the mouthful, with bitter coffee flavours also strong. Dark chocolate and biscuit come through to sweeten each mouthful ever so slightly, but it is the bitter and burnt malt flavours which linger on the palate.

Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. Batch 1267. The aroma has roasted malts and coffee. Black coloured beer with an off-white, beige head. The taste is bitter, has roasted coffee malts, some dark chocolate. Smooth bit creamy mouthfeel. Body itself is slightly thin, and smooth. Little carbonation.

500ml 5.2% BB 20 Aug 2014 Pours near black with a good head. Feel: Medium body and nicely smooth; well-set, medium-low carbonation. Aroma: dark roasted malts with some sweetness, more spicy hops than expected. Hints of smoke and dark fruit. Flavor: similar to the aroma, and again more hoppy than usual for style. O: a good, slightly spicy porter.

An enjoyable brew with many positive aspects. The competition is fierce and this beer is middle of the pack - but a great drink nonetheless.

UPDATED: MAY 14, 2013 update: on tap, i could taste a bit more chocolate in there, but itís still rather thin and the roasted malt isnít all that pleasant. uprate a little bit, as this is an improvement. original: rather disappointed, thatís for sure. looks a wonderful jet black, but beyond that, the charred roastiness isnít doing it for me as it doesnít seem to offer much in the way of those gorgeous coffee or chocolate notes youíd expect (or much anything else) and the mouthfeel is woefully thin. it isnít bad, itís just not at all interesting or something iíd go back to. would expect more from three boys.

The worst thing is that I only brought the one. This is pretty good, itís a little bit oooh a little bit ah, and has a fair bit going on. I canít recall a better porter, but then Iím a beginner, and if this is the bar then there is a big treat somewhere ahead. Start here and follow the yellow brick road.... or the three boys...

Pours a nice dark brown with generous tan head. You can smell the maltiness on the nose. Disappointing on the palate as it is quite thin and lacks a velvety goodness.

Bottle at Lake Hauroko. Pours black with a beige head. Sweet with some dryness. Aromas of toasted malts and caramel. Quite hoppy with both floral and slightly earthy hops notes. Some band-aid aromas. Medium bodied with a smooth velvety mouthfeel. Medium to soft carbonation.

a but thin with chocolate notes, but nothing outstanding. Pretty forgettable and not one of their better efforts.

Aroma: roasty. Appearance: black with a red tinge when held up to the light, brown head that lingered until the end of the beer. Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, hints of chocolate with a roasty finish. Palate: medium body, soft carbonation, long roasty finish. Overall: Superb beer that started out a touch fizzy but by the time i had finished the beer (over an hour) i was wishing i had bought a second bottle. will definitely have this beer again.

Russet to ruby notes in this black beer. Beige head. The aromas are a bit of an enigma. Thereís peppery spiciness and charry toastiness as well. Either itís just because itís late winter, but I could swear that I smell daffodils. Quite cool and then spice and tang that settles across the tongue and becomes bitter (but not too bitter). A second assessment of flavour brings out white currants, gooseberry and other fruity notes. Itís the sort of berry fruit tang that you find in Dubbels. Odd, but tasty enough to go back for seconds.
