What’s a craft brewery to do when all the “typical” IPA hops are gone? Innovate of course, just like craft breweries always have. Hoptimization uses big, bold, bitter hops to get a clean citrusy flavor you’ll love and the bitter bite that you crave. Step away from typical and try something new.

Just awesome, and totally unexpected from this new Virginia brewer. I expected east coast hoppy beer (earthy and more brittish in style) but found it pleasantly californian (citrus, bright, floral). I’d drink this all the time if I lived in Harrisonburg.

Floral (wife says rose), sweet citrus, grapefruit. Bittersweet, medium body, soft carbonation, bittersweet. Grapefruit rind, very dry, pine, slightly astringent. (has a spot for "packaging date", but left blank on label, sad)

2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Orange citrus candy or sherbet. A light, clean floral scent. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Pumpkin orange, hazy body with lava lamp effect of sediment floating. CO2 visible. Moderately large, white froth with decent lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Moderately high hop flavor, especially of orange fruit. Marketed as 71 IBUs, but seems a little lower. Quite palatable. Bitterness is mostly dry with a faint spicy sensation. Slight orangepeel flavor on the finish. Clean grainy malt provides a light general sweetness for balance. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium+ body; smooth texture; good CO2 level. Smooth and comfortable. Alcohol is noticeable, but subtle. Slightly astringent aftertaste. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Classic, to-spec, West Coast-style IPA all-around. Well made and enjoyable. 8/10

Pours a clear amber. A malty and grapefruit aroma. A mix of grains, malts, caramel and citrus hops. Overpowered by the grains rather than hop flavor.
