COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whatís a craft brewery to do when all the ďtypicalĒ IPA hops are gone? Innovate of course, just like craft breweries always have. Hoptimization uses big, bold, bitter hops to get a clean citrusy flavor youíll love and the bitter bite that you crave. Step away from typical and try something new.

Just awesome, and totally unexpected from this new Virginia brewer. I expected east coast hoppy beer (earthy and more brittish in style) but found it pleasantly californian (citrus, bright, floral). Iíd drink this all the time if I lived in Harrisonburg.

Clear amber and copper coloured body with a ridiculously large, seven centimetre tall plain white head. Aroma of light citrus and grassy hop note with some light malt and a hint of yeast. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence with a light grassy and herbal flavour of hops, some subdued malt and a hint of apricot and fruity sweetness at the end. Aftertaste shows a very light finish with the hops coming out and perhaps some grass notes. Overall, a rather light IPA that is seemingly on the session side, but at 7,1% abv, perhaps not so much. Not a bad beer so much as itís just lacking in the flavours of other beers from the style, especially East Coast IPAs. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Giant Food in Falls Church, Virginia on 22-April-2014 for US$1,49 sampled at home in Washington on 06-July-2014.

Pint on tap at Byers Street Bistro, Staunton. Hazy amber with a creamy disc of foam. Nose is resin, citrus zest, toasted grain and earthy orange toffee. Taste is a nice blend of the same. Near medium body is balanced and sessionable with a medium carbonation.

Clear copper pour with a tall sticky off-white head. Aroma of citrus hops, some sweet caramel. The flavor is more to the sweet side. The hop bitterness is low but comes in for some dryness in the finish. Lacks a good crisp hop character.

355 ml bottle from Vienna, VA. Yet another American Hopped Ale. Pours a deep gold towards amber, slight head. Aroma is citrus and slightly earthy hops. Flavor is lightly caramel malts and massive citrus hops. Palate is balanced but dry. I have never been a fan of this style and never will be. It is just not pleasant.

UPDATED: JUL 10, 2014 On draft. Aroma of citrus and roasted nuts. Strong flavors of bitter grapefruit and caramel malts, fainter flavors of chewy hazelnut and toffee. Sophisticated east coast IPA. (Nota bene: Twice Iíve picked up six-packs of this beer and had it be very, very off. Both times the beer had been brewed in the previous two weeks. Once was likely a gusher infection, once the beer was just oily-weird. Wonder if other RateBeer-ers are having similar issues as this could account for the all-over-the-place ratings on this beer. I contacted the brewery each time, received no response.)

Location: Draft at Capital Ale - Innsbrook, 5/1/14

Aroma: The nose is decent, with some citrus hops, some pale malts, caramel, and bit of grain
Appearance: This one pours a clear gold-orange color with a small, bubbly head on it
Flavor: The taste falls along the same lines, with an alright malt and hop flavor
Palate: The body is medium, leaning light, easy drinking, with a finish thatís slightly off
Overall Impression: I thought this was an okay one, but it felt a little flawed to me. Itís not bad at all, run-of-the-mill, but not bad. On the bell curve of this style, it would probably be closer to the bottom than it is to the top.

12oz bottle pours a clear amber with almost zero head. Nose has a lot of fruit, apple and pear mostly, some lemon, malt, a little dried citrus peel, cardboard. Flavor is ok, sweet, lightly citrus, cheap malt, leaves. Watery finish. Not bad, but not very good either.

Just a regular citrussy ipa smell. The taste is not at all like it should be, based on how it smells: Funky, caramel, resin, bread, oily, maybe? Hm. Maybe it was just this bottle... Itís good, but not what I expected...

12-oz. Thanks n! Pours a clear pale gold. Loose white head. Funky wet hoppy nose. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Toasty caramel with bright resiny hop notes on the mid palate. Lonh dry resiny finish.

Citrus, lemon grass, tea leaves, some chlorine. A little hazy, light bronze, lasting smooth white head. Dry, bready, bitter, floral and herbaceous notes, not unlike basil. Light-medium bodied, smooth, cushy carbonation.
