Bomber curtesy of Lubiere at the first ever Ottawa Bartowel tasting. Hazy amber with a biege head. Caramel, apricot, some hops, raisin, barley, vinous - very nice aroma. Mouthfeel is very pleasent and powerful, full bodied, surprisingly high carbonation. bittersweet and becomes more bitter, dry and raisin on the finish with vanilla. Bourbon is very mellow and this beer is very well done.

Lubiere (9765) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 16, 2012
A hazed orange amber barley wine with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, a beautiful vinous malt, with fragrant grassy hops, meaty, pungent, treacle malt, wow! In mouth, a nice balanced mix of vinous malt and floral hops, superb balanced and blended aged barley wine, restrained and smooth. Bieropholie import, about 2 years old. Tasted with Pushkinnow, Spinrsx, Brews Phillips, CFrancis and Ian, Jan. 14 2011, Bartowel Ottawa gathering.

At the first ever Ottawa tasting. Pours a dark brownish yellow with a small carbonation that quickly disappears. Aroma has a nice "aged" pine hop aroma with some raisin and distinctive barley notes. Taste has a low carbonation mouthfeel, a nice bourbon and barely warmth of alcohol added to a moderate hop bitterness. Enjoyed this even though the complexity really wasn’t there.

sampled at FOBAB 2008... semi-transparent apple cider brown pour with a thick fluffy light tan head... caramel and toffee aroma with added bourbon and woody notes... maple, molasses, toffee, bourbon, and wood make up the flavors. smooth and creamy mouthfee. one of the better offerings on that day.

In short: A simplistic strong and very sweet beer with toasted caramel and a pleasant woody character. Good but not very good.
How: Tap at Boston Extreme Beer Fest 2009
The look: Cloudy dark orange body topped by a medium beige head
In long: I just took comparative notes over the disappointing regular Hvedegoop. This Barrel Aged version felt more toasted. It also had a pleasant woody character, not bourbon, not oak, just plain furniture wood. That woody character dried it out a bit and made it felt a lot less syrupy sweet than the regular version. Still a little too sweet for my taste though. Alcohol a little less apparent than in the regular version. Carbonation is minimal. Hops are missing in action. Overall this is a decent sipper and it is an improvement over the disappointing regular Hvedegoop which is not a hard recipe to improve on, give me a cup of peanut butter and I can improve a burnt toast.

I heard it was on tap at Bone Dry and called to see and to my surprise it was so i live 10 minutes from there and on a cold sunday night a barrel aged Hvedegoop sounded good and it was with a big bourbon flavor and a nice white head with hints of oak caramel and a nice vanilla and spice finish to it with all kind of things going on with this beer,if you can get over to Bone Dry it would be worth a try.CHEERS!

I was really surprised and excited to find this on tap at Bone Dry. Big pour served in a shaker. This poured a slightly muddy copper with a thin beige head that quickly settled, leaving minimal lacing. The aroma included strong bourbon, toasted caramel, and a touch of dark fruit. The flavor was also heavy on the bourbon with a sweet dose of caramel. The hops had totally mellowed. Just a light bite at the finish, followed by a lasting note of bourbon and vanilla. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and lush. Very thick...minimal carbonation. A decent sipper, but the bourbon covered up the beer a bit more than I would have liked.

On tap at FoBAB. Poured near-clear medium caramel with a well-retained, creamy cap of beige head. The aroma was quite hot and spicy with a significant barrel impression (bourbon and oak hid the underlying brew unfortunately well).. aged caramel and some vanilla fell beneath.. too much barrel. The flavor found toffee and caramel at the core with spicy wheat and bourbon notes around.. finished spicy as well, and the flavor struck me as better balanced than the nose. Heavier-bodied on the palate and warm with a nice substantial feel at the finish.. this grew on me as it progressed.
