Great Taste 2008. I like the wheat wine idea, but I always have hard time not comparing them to barleywines when I’m drinking them. This was a solid take on the style, and I imagine would age well. Notes of grassy, lemon peel, bitter orange, and cherry. Well crafted, just not as complex as a number of beers I enjoyed that day.

Richmond Summer Gathering. Bomber courtesy of dkachur. Clear red/amber with an off white head. Amazing nose - big wheat and malt - the phrase "maltarded" was coined, and it fits well. Syrupy malt flavors, chewy, soft pepper, some candylike notes, a bit boozy. Pretty damn solid!

22 oz bottle @ Richmond/Williamsburg Gathering-pours an off white ring for a head and copper color. Aroma is syrupy/sweet medium malt, medium fruit. Taste is lots of syrupy/sweet medium malt, medium fruit, some alcohol. This is maltarded. Thanks Dan-dkachur for sharing.

Date: 08/02/08, bomber shared with Doboy, CelticBrew, and Steve E.

Aroma - Notably vinous, raisins, figs, dates, spice

Appearance - Deep orange amber pour, yellowish tan head with a slippery, spotty lace

Flavor - Flavors of dark caramel and dark fruits provide the sweetness, a gentle peppery bitterness comes on slowly, but is sufficient to balance the malts.

Palate - Medium to full body, light carbonation, some oiliness, but a rich and smooth mouthfeel

Overall - Alcohol not much in evidence, excellent drinkability, smooth, well rounded

Very tasty and rich brew with a strong pineapple quality and hoppy fresh flavors. Golden yellow with a nice head. Medium rich palate. Strong but drinkable and refreshing.

Bottle at the Williamsburg Gathering courtesy of dkachur. Pour is copper/dark amber. Strong malty aroma to this. Dan (dkachur) has it right, it was "maltarded’ indeed! Big caramel notes, citrus, hop aromas, and sweet malts. Taste is big caramel and sweet, chewy malts, soft hops, mild alcohol warmth, citrus notes, light pine and light candied fruit. Body is medium-full with a creamy carbonation. Ends with more sweet malts, caramel, hops, citrus fruit and soft alcohol.

Bottle. Thanks to Enjoyit. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a creamy yellowish head. Aroma is chewy hops with a malty backbone and faint candy-like notes. Flavour is pretty much the same, but without the candy-like notes and with much more intense hops. The alcohol is felt, but is well-integrated. Finish is dry with lingering hops and a bit of liquorice notes. Also stingy alcohol notes which almost makes you short of breath (havenít tried that in a beer before, not even stronger beers). It feels both light and heavy at the same time, which makes it easier to drink than usual barley wines, but without losing itís potency. Overall it feels a bit one-dimensional though, due to the massive amount of hops, but itís in a good way. 08-08-08.
