4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber courtesy of cmr1517. Pours a clear dark amber with 3 finger cream head and spotty lacing. Nose is malt, dark fruits, hops and alcohol. Taste is caramel malts, plums and brown sugar with a grapefruit and resin bitter finish that lingers for a while. Medium body. Hides the alcohol pretty well but it’s a definitely a warmer as you drink it. Good beer Chris – thanks for sending it!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours dark copper with a ruby hue. Significant chill haze and an inch-plus head of off-white.
The foam receded within a few minutes revealing a placid surface and zero lacework.
Aromatics lead off with plenty of grapefruit, delicous apples, spruce juice, and tangerine zest. A touch of lemon oil pulls through as well as cherry pulp and Grand Marnier.
Medium bodied and slick. Low carbonation and a heavy grainbill lends a syrupy quality.
A nice combo of malt and wheat lead off the pallet. Slightly tart under the sweet caramel malt, with plenty of resinous hops and citrus fruit follow through.
Spicy and warming. The alcohol builds and adds some cinnamon to the mix.
Bitterness is firm and smooth, which helps offset some off the honey-like residuals.
Finishes with a mix of earthy pine, grapefruit zest, and alcohol.
The hops in this one has mellowed quite a bit from the draught example I had at the Extreme Beer Fest, but the beer has become more rounded as well.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pint on bottle from Ølbutikken, Copenhagen. Thin, patch-like head resting on a crystal clear mahogany body. Strong and inviting aroma of dark wheat and tart fruits. Comprehensive hoppy taste with pine, spices and caramel malts leading to a nice ending of hop bitterness. Full bodied and great mouthfeel. (Shared with Arild and Finn Arvid, 02.06.2008)

Golden-amber colour. Big toasty hop nose with caramel, peach...complex...grapey and with some alcohol. Really toasty and woody on the palate, with a light fruitiness and a woody hop finish. Clean and flavourful, and yet another wheat wine that sits distinctive from the others.

Bought this at DLD. Pours very heavy with a beautiful thick color. Huge fan of this barley wine’s use of caramel, toffee, hops, and tart to make a unique brew. Very high quality brew, much worth the wait in line for it.

Incredibly dense latte head sits atop a thick, not syrupy, fiery orange brew. Sweet but not sickeningly so...this brew displays characteristics of honey, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, and dark fruit. There is a unique hop bitterness that balances this one out...a bit of citrus tartness makes this palatable. Well done...wish it was regularly available. The alcohol doesn’t hit like a ton of bricks either!!!

Brilliant copper color with a slight head. Big fresh cascade hop aroma. Smooth medium body. Nice light caramel sweet flavor with a decently bitter hop/alcohol twang to finish. Very nice Barley Wine Lite here.

MY 1700TH RATING. 66cl bottle. Thanks Christian. Pours clear amber/copper with a creamy white head. Aroma is sweet of sticky hops, alcohol & malts. Warmth from alcohol that tickles your tongue. Sticky palate. Lots of caramel & a lovely hop combination, fruity - mango, pine & peach!. Low carbonation. Very nice!

500ml bottle at London tasting, May 2008. Many thanks to Ungstrup for this one. Bright ginger colour. Given the identity of the collaborators, no surprise to find this was a fairly extreme beer. Terrific hop aroma, suffused with pine and resin, but nicely balanced by a rich, fruity malt character. Hops dominate the flavour, with bags of orange peel and a surprising dollop of sweet, slightly sticky, caramel malt. Intensely sharp and bitter mouthfeel with a quite pronounced alcohol afterburn. The hops are more astringent than aromatic and perhaps strays a little too far from assertive towards aggressive for my taste. Big, brash and brassy but a little more finesse would have enhanced my enjoyment. Wouldn’t have spotted any wheat in the mash - perhaps it is just submerged in the enormity of the hop presence.
