4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
(tap@ Clark St. Ale House) Nice amber/copper body, a dense, sticky white head, real hoppy. pale malts emerge as well though. predominantly floral and citrucy hop load. cleans up very nicely, not resinous and bitter, butlight caramel malt notes, crackery and tasty along with the citrucy, crisp hop bitters. a building fruity/floral hop character is the final development. A GREAT apa

Munster, IN version. Copper color, offwhite head. Aroma very much of hops, citrussy, piney, and floral. Dryly malty flavor, more hops, solid pleasing bitterness. Very good indeed.

The word on the street is true. Avoid the New Ulm, MN product and stick to the Munster, IN stuff (look on the label or for the "tie-dye" caps). The difference between the two is substantial. The New Ulm version looks good but is devoid of character and left me wondering why everyone had such a hard-on for this stuff. The Munster version showed me why. It's fantastic. Hops and malt are extremely well balanced. The hops show through with an expertise that stuns me. Bright, complex and delicious. The high alcohol content is the only thing preventing me from swilling this stuff en masse.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 26, 2005 It pours a hazy amber body and despite being poured straight, it doesn’t make such a big head. What is there is there to stay though and never leaves until the last sip. The smell is deep hops, fragrant and tea-like, especially citrus cascade, a great sniff for sure. Backing crystals are very expressive and procure lots of balancing sweetness. In mouth, you receive the same treatment, tasty malt balanced with loads of hops bring you to a piney bitter aftertaste, but not before passing through a flower field where grapefruits fall from the sky. In my opinion, this would have won a lot from a thicker body, it was thin to medium and a little lacking to support such intensity (or I had too full-bodied beers recently). On the other hand, while it was one of the most tasty, it was also one of the most drinkable APAs I’ve had. Thanks Egajdzis!

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Deep amber color. Definitely strong hop
nose. Can taste cascade hops, but it is not
overly powerful--i.e. I think I still have a sense
of taste and smell. Flavor is initially malty,
and then--pow!--the hops come in and deliver
one of the strongest finishes I have tasted.
Aftertaste of pine, grass, etc... Excellent!
Complex characters, solid flavors, and great aroma.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma of sweet malt like sap, and piney hops. Palate if full bodied for a pale ale which is very satifying. Flavor mostly of citrus and piney hops with a very well balanced malt backing. The balance is what I probably like most about this beer, it has a strong hop profile with out either being very dry or sticky sweet. Mild grapefruit aftertaste

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAY 24, 2005 Re-rate 5-24-05, bottle thanks to Eyedrinkale. Okay, this is a good beer, but it’s not what I remembered from my first rating when I gave it a 4 overall. Aroma is milder than I expected, and the flavor - though enjoyable seemed a bit watery. Much of my oearlier rating remains true, but after all the other great APA’s and IPA’s I’ve had in the past year and a half, Alpha King hsa slipped a couple of notches. Bottle - part of a trade with marinaro500, thanks Joe! Poured beautiful amber color, clear with a small off-white head that diminished rapidly. Aroma is rich caramel malts with lots of citrus hops. Flavor profile seems more like an IPA to me, solid malt backbone - sweet and tasty - with lots of hop bitterness and a lingering dry finish that leaves a slight pucker. Mouthfeel is nice - medium body with creamy carbonation. Another fine brew from FFF’s!

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2003 Huge thanks go out to Indra for hooking a brother up with this fine APA, Thanks Brow!
Rating# 225: WoW, what a beauty in the glass, a rich mahogany colored body with a fat cushion of cream-colored head, extreme lacing, its wonderful thing.
The aroma and flavor-flav are simply killer, big grapefruit, brown sugar, huge suggestions of pine sap, caramel, oh yes, Me Like!
The Alpha King has a fairly creamy mouth feel, a slightly oily palate, but a not so surprisingly dry finish for such an intense APA.
Overall this is an exceptional APA, one that coats your glass with a thick curtain of lacing. Alpha king comes recommended by this rater!

I had been waiting to try this beer for a long time. I found it on tap at McGregors in Rochester. The smell was excellent, hops and fruits. The taste was full and extremely balanced. There was absolutely no aftertaste. It went down extremely smooth and left me waiting for my next drink. Overall excellent APA.
