Big American Pale Ale with citrusy aroma- a hop lover’s cult beer and Three Floyds’ flagship beer Brewed with Cenntennial, Cascade & Warrior Hops.
Alpha King is an American Pale Ale with a bold citrus hop character. We brew all our beers for our own demanding tastes. If you’re unwilling to compromise on your beer, we urge you to try it.

Bottle @ THLBBT May. Pours a clear golden beer with a medium sized, off white head on top. Aroma of sweet matls, hayish, grassy notes, lemon zest and citric notes. Flavor has big bitter influence in there, some typical Three Floyds stuff going on, soft carbonation and really, rather sweet malty aftertaste. Good in balance, good stuff!

Look - Darker than a typical Pale Ale. Head has more of a ten color to it than ivory. Head is medium and lacing is there. Medium carbonation size. Smell - Subtle dankness. Lemon/lime. Is there very faint bubble gum? Taste - Bready. Caramel. Not too bitter. Citrus finish. Feel - Smooth. Doesn’t sting. Doesn’t explode but not flat. Overall - Why do you need to be blown away with bitterness? This is drinkable beer with a hint of what you want in an IPA. I liked it more out of a bottle.

Bottle: Cloudy copper color with a small, off-white head. Aroma is strong & pungent for a pale ale. Peppery, earthy, raw, dirty hops with a heavy, heavy malt backdrop. Caramel, booze, & some toasted bread. Super heavy carbonation, each sip fizzles away on my palate. Spicy & herbal hop notes, leafy with a strong earthy & white pepper presence. Toasted caramel, baked bread, pungent grapefruit rind finish with a touch of dank hop oil & malt sugar. Not bad, just a little messy. Zombie Dust stomps all over this, though.

This is a very solid pale ale, great looking, hop forward, closer to an IPA than most Pale Ales. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Great aroma grapefruit and all. Way to bitter astringent, ok if it were and IPA or XXIPA. Alcohol heat. Not really a pale ale. Not what I expected.

Pours a murky copper color with white head. Huge citrus hop aroma and flavor. A little too bitter for me

Resinous pine and grapefruit juice aroma with some dank fresh cut grass aroma. Taste is slighly bitter grapefruit juice followed by a slight caramel and dry peppery cracker. Palate is nice and bubbly

Disclaimer: this review is more a rant/blog entry than a blow-by-blow version of tasting notes. The first time I had one of these it was 1999, the world was (relatively speaking) a happier place and Nick Floyd and his sons were just starting to make a name for themselves regionally, brewing in Hammond... and hadn’t yet turned into the arrogant, money grubbing bastards they are today. Times have changed and so has my palate. 16 years ago, this was one of the happiest beers available in the Midwest, today this is pretty mainstream. Still good (black pepper, crackers, citrus, solid appearance and palate) just not earth shattering as I remember it to be (amazing what progress in American brewing will do to perspective). I will say I like the old label better... wonder if they’ll replace with the statue of AK out front of the brewery with a comic book character version too.

So I finally found a bottle of this, Pale Ale my ass. It’s pretty darn colorful, nice reddish hue, off white head. Tons of aroma, grapefruit and pine mostly. Nicely carbonated and very smooth. Everything I have heard about this is spot on.

Stopped at the brewery on the way home from Ohio during spring break. Picked up a case of my favorite 3 Floyds - Gumballhead and split a case between Yum Yum and Alpha King. This is another great offering from 3 Floyds. Nice copper color, with a full head. The classic hoppy and citrus flavor common with 3 Floyds. Just another great beer from this brewery.
