GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 25, 2008 Pours a dark, dark brown out of the bottle that looks black in the glass. The head is a dense three-finger tan that dissipates fairly quickly to a thin coating along the top leaving decent lacing.
Smell is mainly burnt coffee and chocolate malts. There is also a definite sweetness as well with vanilla and maybe some oatmeal in the background.
Taste picks up where the aroma left off with sweet malts up front but with a burnt coffee kick and some oatmeal smoothness. I also got more chocolate in taste and a hint of hops in the finish with some coffee bitterness as well.
Mouthfeel is super smooth with solid carbonation and helps the flavors stick to your mouth.
This is one of the better porters I’ve had in a while and it is certainly drinkable. Highly recommended! ahalloin (54), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jul 19, 2008 Poured from a 22 oz. bottle. This beer pours a dark black thinnish fluid with a light tan head of fluffy tiny bubbles. The aroma is of dark chocolate, dark cherries, with hints of other fruits. The mouthfeel is outstanding due to the great bottle conditioning Floyds does. The carbonation springs to life in the mouth but with a smoothness. The flavor is best described as a spicy porter with dark cherries and bittersweet chocolate. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jul 15, 2008 2 or 3 yr old vintage courtesy of tpd975. Pours dark brown with garnet edges and thin tan head. The aroma is crystal malts then turning dark to burnt malts, a bit of dark chocolate along with some pine hops. The taste feels thin with some highly roasted to burnt malts, sweet malty to caramel-ness and a river of muted pine hops running out in the back. Into the finish the roasty malts and burnt malts linger deep into the after taste. Pours a deep black body with an immense beige head, be careful pouring this one it’s almost an Guinness sized head. The aroma is roasted malts and coffee, brown sugar and some hops. The flavor is just great; smooth and rich roasted malts along with a sweet chocolate and toffee mix. This beer has a unique bitter finish of hops and coffee. A top porter for sure. moelikebeer (219), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jul 8, 2008 Big thanks to BDR for sharing this one! Bottle. Intense dark pour with creamy white head. Strong coffee aroma with some chocolate and spice. Sweet flavor of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and cinnamon. Wonderful mouthfeel! badbeer (432), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 Christmas ’05 Edition.
Black with a stunning tan head leaving excellent lacing. Complex smell of pine, coffee, currants, and chocolate. Coffee starts you off, then pine with a dry roasted and chocolate finish. Low carbonation and light bodied, I could stand a little more body. I enjoyed it and look forward to trying it again. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jul 4, 2008 Sampled from 22-oz bottle and shared by BDR, pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thin tan head that has some nice retention, some spotty lacing and some brown ring highlights. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some coffee, dark chocolate and a touch of berry. Taste is smooth, creamy with a nice balance of roasted dark malt, chocolate and some sweet molasses. Finish has a slight metallic texture, some alcohol presence but has a sweet chocolate and toasted dark malt aftertaste that lingers after the finish.
