Lothore (276), California, USA Apr 26, 2008 A- Pours a little dark for a porter, pretty black, a small coffee colored head.
S- Smells way hopped up, like an ipa only with notes of roasted malt.
T- Three floyds definitely has a distinct taste in the hops. Fairly smooth, chocolatey, roasted malt, mint aftertaste. I could definitely see this one being a winner around xmas time.
M- Creamy, tad light on the head.
D- This one is a bit heavy for a porter but still highly drinkable. In my opinion three floyds often doesn’t live up to the hype but I have to admit this one was excellent. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Apr 22, 2008 Updated: Mar 7, 2009Bottle thanks to yem25, thanks Ryan. Poured a deep brown color with a thick beige head that held nicely and left some webby lacing. Aroma of light chocolate, toffee, a hint of roast, and citrus hops. Interesting. Lightly tart citrus entry mellows out into a smooth, lightly roasted chocolate that ends with a bit of chalky bitterness to compliment the hops. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Definitely an interesting brew, I like that they tried something different. Not sure how often I could drink it though. Thanks again yem. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 16, 2008 22 oz. bottle - thanks SQNfan!!! was eager to try this for a while and it didn’t disappoint; pours thin and slightly off white head fades immediately; aromas of coffee and dank fruit; thin body with flavors of bitter chocolate and a dry finish; everything improves with temp; hop aromas come out at the bottom of the glass as it gets more syrupy; a great porter and FFF strikes again RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA Apr 11, 2008 Opaque black with a tan head. Chocolaty malt aroma with some surprising hops in there. Flavor is chocolate with a touch of coffee and a lightly bittersweet finish. Nice and smooth. Excellent. beereality (3), Chicago, Illinois, USA does not count Apr 8, 2008 dark brown, with ruby highlights, nice light brown, very fine head., hops hit you right along with roasted malt and choco-coffee aroma. Wow this is very good, lots going on here, thick rich mouthfeel. wonderously hoppy smokey malty. I could drink alot (2) of these. satan165 (541), River Grove, Illinois, USA Apr 6, 2008 never had a porter with hops making their prescence so well known! even the 3F black sun stout (which claimed to have their signature buckets o’ hops) failed in this department, but the bitterness in the alpha klaus reveals itself immediately. it lingers nicely in the back of the pallete...all the while roasted malts reminicent of even oats besides the typical chocolate/coffee flavors coat the front immediately. i am happy with just a solid stereotypical chocolatey porter all day long but this brings something new to the table, and of course its the 3F trademark. this is a perfect example of taking a traditional style and standing it on its head while keeping what defines it intact. another hit! mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Mar 20, 2008 black pour with a thin cream head and it smells like a bar of chocolate. perfect on the palate with a huge chocolate flavor and a great aftertaste. BleacherBum (176), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA Mar 18, 2008 22 oz. purchased at the brewpub last December. So the two lowest ratings on the current page I’m looking at were ratings below 3 points. Interesting. One claims the beer to be too sweet. One too dry. Again, interesting. I don’t rate often enough but I felt compelled to do so here. I’ve had this a few times, last night being one of them. The Alpha Klaus starts with this big chocolate aroma that is complimented by big piney, floral American hops. Similar to their Black Sun Stout, but not as creamy/rich/heavy in aroma. The layers of complexity on the nose lead to more on the tongue. Roastiness and a bit of milk chocolate to start. Mid palate the bitterness chimes in, pushing those showoff roasted malts to the side. The mouthfeel on this was really amazing: Slick and somewhat thick. It cleans itself up well. A dry, light roast finish with that signature citrus American hop. This really is the ultimate winter warmer to these lips. Incredible beer.
