Commercial Description:
Alpha Klaus is Alpha King’s cousin. A big American X-mas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt and Mexican sugar and of course tons of strange American hops! Cheers.

For some odd reason, the last time I had the Klaus I didn’t rate it and some fishing around revealed a leftover 06 bottle so why not rate it to see how it holds up? Blackish pour with a huge gushing head that eventually subsides. Aroma is big and roasty with lots of coffee and chocolate plus some light hop aroma (less so at this age). Flavor is roasty with lots of fresh espresso, dark chocolate, and some nice hop bite. Smooth mouthfeel that is damn good. I still prefer it young, but it ages quite nicely. One of the best porters around.

nice and dark. malty (in a good way), not too thick, but with some chocolate and coffee thrown in for good measure. theres some spice and citrus deep down in it as well. aroma, palate, and flavor are fairly complex. a winner!

650 ml bottle from archerliquors.com . Dark brown with a fizzy brown head. Aroma of chocolate, roastiness, and citrus hops. Initial taste burnt coffee, citrus and pine hops, and finishing with a bitter dark chocolate taste. Quite good.

Had at 2nd Houston Beer Tasting. Thanks to Big Steve and MaltOMeal for this one. Dark choclate pour with thin tan ring for a head. Roasty notes with nuts. Flavor is smooth with some chocolate and maltyness. Very nice finish with a medium bodied mouthfeel.

22oz bomber. Pours dark with a half-finger tan head which dissipated except for some around the edge. Aroma was confusing to me. Like a mix of chocolate and roasty dark beer smells along with berry fruit, spices and hops. Huh? The taste was roasty, chocolate, espresso, fruit and spice. Interesting. Mouthfeel was medium-to-thick and chewy with an unusual, not too bitter aftertaste.

22oz, 2006 vintage, pours nice deep dark brown almost black with a medium fluffy offwhite head, however this flavor still has alot of hops for being a year old taste is hoppy initially then follows into roasty malts and coffee.. . Nice, glad to have another one in the cellar.

Pours deep dark brown, almost black, with a off-white head that holds a decent cap throughout the glass. Aroma is a great mix of big hops and big roast malt character. Flavor is very much the same, with the hops coming up front, followed closely by a big roast malt flavor, with lots of coffee like notes. Body is medium.

Tap at The Maproom, Chicago. The snow had returned after a brief respite, and I was happy for that. Pours jet-black with a subtle, off-white head. Aroma is sweet hops and orange, but as my sister-in-law Erin puts it: "It smells like college, like stale, day after frat house." Anyhoo, the first sip presents a mixture of wild berries and grapefruit. As the liquid progresses along the tongue, the sweetness gives way to a more bitter, floral finish. Mouthfeel isn’t as slick and coating as I would have liked considering it’s black-hole-like appearance, but not everything can be perfect. GREAT beer, despite what my silly sister-in-law says!
