Jmichael (633), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Dec 20, 2007 pours a black with hight full easy to produce frothy tan head. sweet smooth malty aroma. fluffy smooth milky palate with creamy finish and slight carbonated tingle on the front. good full bodied, smooth, light and full. complex porter yet simple. presario (2955), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Dec 19, 2007 Canadian Festivus from tjthresh. Black with a rich starting head. Lasting foam ring around the edges. Rich aroma with lots of subtle aromas. Chocolate, wood, a bit of prune and bubblegum and hint of charcoal. Initial sugary taste gives way to charcoal and alcohol; fruity finish gives way to hoppy aftertaste. Interesting mix as the flavours blend together in each sip. dmac (1423), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Dec 16, 2007 22 oz bomber purchased at Capones several months ago. I am very suprised to see how well this ber held up considering I bought it six months ago. Pours a solid brown with slight burgundy hues on the edges and a large rocky light biege head that leaves some nice lacing. A very hoppy aroma, especially for how old this beer is, only a slight bit of chocolate in the aroma. Medium bodied with average carbonation, would of liked it to be creamier but it does seem to be on par for the style. Big roasty flavor of tobacco, tar, bitter chocolate and slight citrus fruit. Very pleasantly suprised by this beer, and I do like suprises like the time I found that half eaten roast beef sub.......mmmm beef. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA Dec 14, 2007 12-10-07 bottle.
Thick black with a tan fluffy head and great lacing. Chocolate roasted aroma with some hints of vanilla and caramel as well. The texture is pure perfection - creamy and smooth, not heavy or overly thick... ideal! Hops play nicely with the hops in the flavor - a good balance. Porter taste with a nice added creaminess that other porters seem to lack. Would love to drink many, many more - one of my favorite porters by far! Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Dec 13, 2007 On tap at the Three Floyds pub. Dark chocolate oak colored pour; red around the glassy edge. Fresh cold press, mint leaves, and warm cinnamon dough in the aroma; pleasantly earthy, damply green and softly spiced. Bold vegetal coffee notes and cola bitterness in the flavor highlight alot of dry conifer woodsiness. Holly, spruce, dry hops. Pure, amiable cinnamon sweetness, very bready and rich with the crunch of mexican sugars, imbued briefly with cranberry tartness and needly bitterness. Black licorice licks strongly but not astringently in a very sweet middle palate; sugars are well bridled, hops carefully managed. Medium to full bodied, smooth and fairly sticky in the mouth. Very earthy before smacking with root beer candies and dark toffee in a long finish. Well made, and achieving with ease the delicate balance between its dark sweetness and Christmas hop-spice interplay. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Dec 12, 2007 Pours black with a hint of ruby edges. Big lasting tan head. Smell is damn near perfect, and unmatched by pretty much any porter I’ve had. Very big roasty malt, slight coffee, some mild sweetness and mild noticeable hops in there as well. Very aromatic and fantastic nose. Nice roasty character. balanced mild sweetness and slightly drying and bittering hops. The hops are just bordering on too much for a porter, but never really get there. Moderate to mildly rich mouthfeel. Hoppy for the style but it works. Soft carbonation and a nice overall uniqueness makes this a must try.
