bryandhargrave (165), Richmond, Virginia, USA Dec 12, 2007 i dont even like porters. this was freaking great. i really wish i could get 3floyds in virginia.... and the xmas beer year round holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 10, 2007 22 oz bomber straight from the brewery. I had this on tap a couple time last year and enjoyed the hoppy balance with the malts. I found this years to not be nearly as good as last years. Pours dark brown/black with a beige head. Chocolate malts, roasted, balanced. Light body. Similar flavors but lacking something special that 3F usually comes through with. Solid porter, but nothing outstanding. Where’s the hops of Christmas past? hombrepalo (745), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 10, 2007 22oz, Very dark brown, could not see through it. very light head. nutty and chocolaty taste, sweet but hoppy too. Smooth finish, dry aftertaste. Liked it alot! Another good Three Floyds beer. these guys know how to make good beer! Vav (13), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 9, 2007 22oz Growler. Dark dark brown. Not going to judge the head, pint glass just came out of the dishwasher (girlfriend wont listen!) Smooth, rich chocolaty barley with the most hop presence out of any porter i’ve had. This, however, works. Slightly alcoholic at the end with a soft, nutty, dry finish. AnnieMaim (1), Chicago, Illinois, USA does not count Dec 8, 2007 I made this beer "The Official Beer of My Birthday Month" for more reasons that just because it’s only available during said month. I love the Floyds and I love porters. What’s not to like? I’m new to the world of reviewing beer, so bear with me here. I’ve had it both on tap and in 22oz bottles. The two are noticeably, if only slightly different. The bottle has a bit more of a strong flavor. Lots of chocolate, a little hoppy (as one would imagine anything with "ALPHA" in the name would provide). I’m going to have to stock up. 37steel (186), St. Charles, Illinois, USA Dec 8, 2007 22 oz bottle. Deep dark brown with a big tan head. Lots of piney and floral hop aromas with a hint of alcohol notes at the end. A lot of chocolate flavors. A hint of floral hops at the finish. The mouthfeel is a bit thin for what I was hoping, but very good non-the-less. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 7, 2007 Updated: Dec 9, 200712/7/07, on tap at maproom, $3.50/12oz beer of the month special. pours dark brown with creamy tan head. nose of piney and floral hops with a roasty milk chocolate to it. flavor has sweet piney and juicy hops with milk chocolate and a touch of roast to it. mouth feel is a bit thin as the body is thin. this is very drinkable. it could be one of those "this beer used to be better" but i recall enjoying this a lot more in years past with more hops.3.7.
12/9/07, and 2 days later holdenn shares a bottle and we both agree, this beer is not as a hoppy as last year. it is now a nice porter but i thought it was the hops that always made this special. no more! 3.7. DrHomolka (726), Columbus, Ohio, USA Dec 4, 2007 Fresh 2007 bomber. Pours normal porter brown/black with a pretty big and foamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, slight roast, faint tobacco, some zesty, perhaps piney hops but nowhere near the amount I was expecting. Interesting taste. Prickly hops and a roasty chocolate flavor mix before a very long, pretty bitter finish. Silky, creamy and soft in the mouth with a decent amount of carbonation and a medium/full body. Certainly different than your average porter. Enjoyable.
