Hazmatt (363), Virginia, USA Dec 26, 2005 Bottle. ’05 Very deep, dark brown, tan head. Roasted chocolate aroma. Roasty notes predominated by chocolate flavor and sweet finish, hop flavor. Could have been slightly stronger. Overpriced but very good. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Dec 25, 2005 Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Nice dark pour with a good sized dark tan head. Hoppy aroma with hints of chocolate. Great beer. madcow75 (425), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA Dec 25, 2005 Bottle. Pours dark brown/black with fluffy light brown head. Initial aroma of piney hops transitions to roasted malts and smoke. I taste piney hops initially and then some coffee and roasted marshmellows. Finish is mostly of bitter coffee. It is a little thin. Overall a good Christmas beer. tjthresh (1746), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Dec 25, 2005 Updated: Dec 29, 2006Rerate: Not at all the beer I remember from last year. Hefty body. Loads of chocolate and the hops really shine.
This is the first pint that I enjoyed at the Three Floyds brewpub. It was presented in an English pint glass. Dark brown with a huge dense rocky head that didn’t want to go away. The nose was all hops. Amarillos if I had to guess. Some chocolate and roast flavor. A touch sweet, but the hops were the feature act here too. A bit on the thinner side. Overall, Alpha Klause did not live up to expectations. Brigadier (1220), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Dec 24, 2005 Completely amazing Christmas mix. It does not taste anything like a porter; at least, I was expecting more of a porter taste than what I experienced. It pours dark chocolately brown with a thin lacing. Smells of chocolate and berries. The taste contains a complex mixture of chocolate, smoke and berries that lingers in the mouth for a short while. I can’t wait to have this next Christmas when I find it again. jimbowood (947), Athens, Georgia, USA Dec 24, 2005 Wow! Floral hop aroma which is very unporter-like. Pours black from the bottle with a caramel to off-white head with light lacing. Great porter/IPA flavor- hoppy bitterness with strong chocolate. A great beer for Christmas Eve. Best porter I’ve had I do believe. pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA Dec 24, 2005 Bottle: This is my kind of porter -- high on the hops! I have never had a porter where the aroma was dominated by hops. At first, I thought I was sniffing a black IPA! It pours jet black with a brown head. I noticed flavors of chocolate covered espresso beans. It also had tinges of smoke and briquettes. You can also taste the hops in the aftertaste as well. This portes is also mellow and soft with real fine carbonation. Another Christmas pleasure to drink. Thanks Indians Red. xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 21, 2005 Updated: Jan 10, 2006Bottle. Chocolate malt strong on the nose, with a mess o’ crazy hops too. Tastes like... hop chocolate floral beer, some spices, a bit of alcohol showing through quite pleasantly, especially in a nice finish. Looong hopmalt finish. Let this one warm up, dark chocolate and coffee becomes much more apparent, in the flavor and the aroma. Unique and exquisite.
