dalekliz (546), San Diego, California, USA Feb 22, 2009 Bottle, sampled at Woodshop Quad. Pours a deep dark brown-black with a tan ring. Intense aroma, of malt, chocolate, and molasses. Taste is rich and sharp, malt, chocolate, wood, pine hops. Lingering sharpness. Huge and tasty. phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Feb 22, 2009 Pitch black, dark motor oil colour. Head was medium sized. Aroma is mocha- roasted coffee beans, spices and cinnamon. Taste is super creamy, chocolatey with smokey undertones. Finishes soft with barbeque notes. Interestingly enough it had some wierd bananna notes in it as well. Maybe like a bananna split? Anyway- good stuff! malrubius (969), Valley Stream, New York, USA Feb 19, 2009 22 ounce bottle split in pint glass. (What’s with the snifter recommendation for everything?) Dark brown black with lasting dense head and full lace. Fresh green American hop chocolate and coffee aroma. Dark chocolate roasted coffee medium dark fruit with a bursting fresh green hops finish. This is not a traditional porter. But it is fucking outstanding. One of my new favorite beers. Medium body and medium-low carbo for a nice soft mouthfeel. Complex, fresh, unique and out of this world. SHANER4 (370), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Feb 17, 2009 22 oz. bottle - Pours sark with large tan head.
Aroma - bakers chocolate, vanilla and musty hops.
Flavor - More of a earthy dunkel taste with hops, chocolate and hops.
Palate - light to medium mouthfeel with averge carbonation. Finish is slightly dry with lingering musty hop flavor.
Overall - A decent porter but not that impressed. glkaiser (1150), Seattle, Washington, USA Feb 9, 2009 Bottle thanks to some cool ass guy from my fantasy football league! Haven’t had this since I lived in Chicago four years ago....a welcome beer to revisit! Pours dark brown with out of control head that overflows with the lightest pour; managed to save most of it, though. Smooth roasty mix of malt with moderate dark fruit and a very unique sweetness. Big bitterness for a porter of any kind, but it melts together pretty nicely. Not too heavy, and I could drink this all winter... timsilvia32 (445), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Feb 8, 2009 22 oz. Nearly black pour, white head. Surprisingly piney aroma, some peat and roast malt. Flavor is also surprisingly crisp, very dry and hoppy. This over-rides the earthy malt, chocolate and coffee. Nearly creamy, but the bittyness hurts the mouthfeel a bit. Finishes with some linering coffee and hop bitterness. Really too much hops for the style. More alcohol warming as well than I would prefer, even though it is not that terribly high an abv. Drinkability is pretty meh. Unfortunately I had rather high expectations for this. Hopefully with some age this will mellow out a bit. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Feb 8, 2009 Large dark pour with dark tan head. Chocolate, caramel, and light coffee step out on the aroma. Full rich choco flavor with a coffee kicker. Full bodied with very good carbonation. Not the huge hop bomb I expected but damn nice. Ceebs25 (217), Naperville, Illinois, USA Feb 3, 2009 22 oz bottle. Near heavenly aroma on this one, tons of roasted, nutty malts, dark chocolate, coffee beans, and very pronounced hop backing as well of standard yet always interesting 3Fs variety. Nice pour as well, small-medium creamy beige head, mostly dissipates, with a little lacing, and a color of dark sepia. The first thing I notice upon sipping this one is the excellent balance for a strong and very hop heavy porter. Less heavy on the body than i remembered but definitely not in bad way, it also very drinkable and can easily be drunk as a session beer. A good amount of roastiness fills the flavor profile throughout, could also be described as smokey as well. Semi sweet/ semi rich black/chocolate malt and minor sugar crystals come through, but it is not all that chocolaty nor coffee flavored either as maybe i would expect. Just a very solid combination of darker yet not overly sweet malt. Hop backing is as evident as any as i can even describe them to be slightly citrus mango and floral in style. Maybe this one wouldn’t be for anyone nor would i expect most people to enjoy it quite like i did, but i must say that alpha klaus is definitely my kind of beer. Wow, very hard to beat.
