3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 Pours a jet black color with a two finger creamy head that goes away slowly. Smells of citrus fruits like pineapple and lemon with some pine; as well as roasted coffee and chocolate undertones. Can detect some sweetness from the mexican sugar as well. Smells more like a black ipa than a porter, but I’m not surprised because it is floyds. The taste profile is the opposite of the smell. Taste starts with roasted coffee, some milk chocolate, vanilla. Then in the middle you start to get the citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit. But mostly get pine qualities which make sense since it is a christmas porter. Gets a much smoother and creamier mouthfeel. The roasted coffee and chocolate stay constant throughout. Finishes with a blend of the pine and citrus qualities, as well as the bold, roasted coffee and chocolate notes, maybe some licorice. For a 6% beer, the mouthfeel is not watery in the least bit. Medium body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel. Nice carbonation. Not as good as their snow weasel porter, which has more hop qualities in it; but still a top notch, smooth porter.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from a recent trade. Small snifters at Peter and Gail’s house. Pours a very dark brown, black with a slight off-white head. The aroma is complex with chocolate, vanilla, spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, roasted malts, Brazil nuts, wood barrel and peat. The taste was a little less complicated. Solid dark chocolate, spices, peat, light coffee, and dark fruits. Medium body, some carbonation. Finish was spices and peat. Good, not my fav however.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewpub, served in an English pint. Pours hazy chestnut with a moderate creamy tan head that fades slowly to a thin cover. The nose has big chocolate and roast malts, along with prominent hops, brown sugar and a touch of coffee. The flavour is balanced between slightly dry malts with dark chocolate on the one hand and roasted malts, coffee and earth on the other. The finish is long and roasty with lingering chocolate and complex hops. On the palate it is medium-full in body with a milky texture an average carbonation. Overall a very nice chocolate porter with impressive American hops. 2013-12-29

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle to glass. Dark black with off white head. Aroma is coffee, pine, caramel, figs, roasted malt, citrus. Mouthfeel is great with a medium light body and average carbonation. Taste is sweet initially with a bitter & astringent following and a dry finish. Overall this is a complex brew that marries a Porter with an IPA. Very well done.

I thought that the citrusy hops clashed with the roasty porter characteristics. i’m disappointed; i’ve loved a lot of hoppy porters, but apparently not this one

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 28, 2014 Bottle (2012), with thanks to Drew. Pours a deep ruby black with a medium brown head, creamy with nice lacing. Aroma is roasty, cigarettes, chocolate, rich. Flavor is the same, lightly sweet, roasty, coffee, chocolate, touch of ashes, medium bitterness. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Things really come together nicely in this beer. Not getting much individual character from whatever "strange" hops were used due to the age, but what this has become is downright awesome. Definitely one of my favorite imperial porters.

Pours nearly pitch black with a little light on the edges and a fluffy brown head. Nice roasty malt on the aroma, milk chocolate, caramel, nice floral hops, and something I assume is the mexican sugar. Super toasty taste, toffee, strange brown sugar note, caramel, and a nice citrusy hop finish. Not bad, the sugar adds a really strange taste. The strong hop character is really well balanced.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
From a 22oz bottle, poured very dark brown medium head. Smell malty, slight chocolate with some hops. Taste some chocolate, licorice, hops slight vanilla. A very different type of porter but in a good way. Liked it a lot.

Pours black with low-medium head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate, mint. Taste is of chocolate, dust, roasted malt, some "fresh" feeling. Palate: Light-medium body. Overall: Nice roastiness. Kind of black IPA’ish. A good beer.
