Big chocolate and hop aroma helped by caramel malts. Thinner in body than expected. Excellent and well balanced flavors of chocolate, coffee, caramel and hops. Well made beer. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 23, 2003 I was happy to say the least to find this on tap when visiting friends in Chicago. This very dark brown beer had a huge, sweet hop and caramel malt aroma. Fantastic. Pine and oak flavors dominate, with the underlying citris always present and following through to the finish. Truly delicious. zathrus13 (1321), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA

Update: I cellered a bottle for 2 years. The hops are way subduued now. And you can taste the flavors of chocolate and tootsie rolls. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 4, 2003 (Draught) Looks like a perfect stout - black body with a lush, frothy "draught" head. Surprisingly sweet, yet perfectly balanced with hopps. Fruity like a barleywine. Good, but very different. I think it would be a little better if it wasn't so heavy and sweet. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Aug 28, 2008 POurs a very very dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is very dry and lots of roasted malts with some semi sweet chocolate mixed in. Flavor was just silky smooth rasoted coffee beans and nice caramel and chocolate notes. I put this up there with Edmund Fitzgerald anyday. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 27, 2007 Bomber from GF’s dad. Dark brown, almost black color with large tan head. Aroma is a lot of roasted malt, chocolate, slight coffee, very nice. Flavor is coffee, hoppy, roasted malt. Medium to full body that is creamy. Very nice porter, bordering on stout. | 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Dec 22, 2003 Updated: Jan 20, 2005Very unique aroma for a porter, this one has a big hop profile, very piney , sweet. Beer pours dark brown with a very large, fluffy, bubbly off white head that is retained. Flavor goes with the aroma. Initial flavor is malty, a bit smoked, the finish is hoppy though not in the massive amount the aroma suggests. An extremely unique brew that gets added to my must have each year list. Thanks to EddieG for this one.
Update for 2004 version: This one for me now hits all the marks. Incredible pine, spruce, chocolate aroma. One of the most lush mouthfeels ever, and the most delicious flavor of chocolate and hops ever. My first perfect score!!!
