Alpha Klaus is Alpha King’s cousin. A big American X-mas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt and Mexican sugar and of course tons of strange American hops! Cheers.

Aged in oak barrels.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours dark brown (almost black) with a small, creamy, lightly-tanned head. The nose is a medley of cola, coconut and toasted oak. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation. The flavor is heavily roasted and offers a decadent blend of sweet fudge, toasted coconut and bourbon. Finishes sweet and chocolaty. Kudos to landhoney for landing and sharing this world class bottle of beer!

On tap at DLD 2013. Dark brown color. Minimal tan head. Bigger body. Kind of a chewier taste, light carbonation. More dry finish. Tastes much bigger than standard Alpha Klaus. Wood, little vanilla, little spice, bigger liquor taste. Milk chocolate, much less pronounced hop, but still mildly hoppy. More stout-like malt characteristics, little roast, but not quite the body of a stout, so the barrel is a little more pronounced, but it’s nice. Bitter taste, light sweet, good long complex aftertaste. Much boozier than regular Alpha Klaus, but no burn or bite, nice warm buzz. Good, interesting stuff.

Bottle shared at tasting. Pours black with a thick beige head with low retention. Aroma is massive oak and bourbon, chocolate, fudge, vanilla, and very subdued roasted notes. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light bitter. Warming in the finish and oily but lighter than expected mouthfeel. Still fairly full bodied with soft but tingly carbonation. I get the impression that the base beer has been very overpowered by the BA but still very good.

Tap at 2009 DLD: Deep cola brown with a solid almost creamy head, very good lace upon the glass. The aroma is quite interesting with a sugary component that seems based a vanilla beans and Crème brûlée. There are some notes of oak and pine needles, slight peaty smoked ester too. The taste is very much barrel influenced, the hops are driven to the back by sweet malts and bourbon characters. Chocolate and vanilla notes throughout. Moderate charred and smoky notes around the edges. The mouth feel is much heavier than than normal Alpha Klaus with was unexpected considering most BA porters actually seem thinner than their non BA brothers. Part of me loves this and then part of me is dying for some hops. I honestly dunno.

Draft to half-pint glass at Dark Lord Day. Looks good; a dark cola with thin beige lacing. Smells good too; chocolate malt and hops with a nice oak presence. Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel. Good stuff!

66cl bottle courtesy of Kermis and shared :-) thanks Thin tan head. Bourbon aroma. Clear dark pour. Vanilla and bourbon in the aftertaste. The barrel aging is lovely. A great brew!

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Munster, IN). Pours a pitch black opaque pour, a moderate lighter brown head that stays around creamy, laces well enough. Aromas are a decent dosage of barrel, bourbon, vanilla, and wet oak, mixed with roasted malts and a touch of booziness, a bit sweet on the nose, with some cocoa coming in. Nice. Initial is medium bodied, not as heavy on the palate as expected, pretty good dryness and hop in the taste, moving to bourbon, warming alcohol, vanilla, and roast. The wet wood gives it a deeper element, not as sweet as the nose would suggest. Light cocoa, caramel, and some fant roasted coffee towards the backend. Not as boozy as anticipated, coats ok enough. My only knock might be that this thinned out a little more than I would have liked, although the bitterness is pretty nice. Cheers!

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2013 75cl, as BA Alpha Klaus, with Red wax (Vintage 2012), Bottle 314/423 (no mention of ABV), exclusive American brew, from De Hopduvel Gent, complex sweet Porter, woody/roasted and slightly alcoholic/fruity, yet not too heavy, very balanced, hazy, good head, very good X-Mas brew, yet very expensive!

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2009 I had a hit from a fellow clubber’s growler (Thanks!) at the last Flossmoor Station mug club tapping. The body was pretty much black and it had a stunted brown head. The aroma was Bourbon and vanlla, chewy dark malt, and some oak. Very smooth. The taste was a repeat of the aroma, very nice, but I missed the hoppy bite that first drew me to the non-BA version.
