4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours dark brown (almost black) with a small, creamy, lightly-tanned head. The nose is a medley of cola, coconut and toasted oak. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation. The flavor is heavily roasted and offers a decadent blend of sweet fudge, toasted coconut and bourbon. Finishes sweet and chocolaty. Kudos to landhoney for landing and sharing this world class bottle of beer!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at 2009 DLD: Deep cola brown with a solid almost creamy head, very good lace upon the glass. The aroma is quite interesting with a sugary component that seems based a vanilla beans and Crème brûlée. There are some notes of oak and pine needles, slight peaty smoked ester too. The taste is very much barrel influenced, the hops are driven to the back by sweet malts and bourbon characters. Chocolate and vanilla notes throughout. Moderate charred and smoky notes around the edges. The mouth feel is much heavier than than normal Alpha Klaus with was unexpected considering most BA porters actually seem thinner than their non BA brothers. Part of me loves this and then part of me is dying for some hops. I honestly dunno.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 28, 2009 I had a hit from a fellow clubber’s growler (Thanks!) at the last Flossmoor Station mug club tapping. The body was pretty much black and it had a stunted brown head. The aroma was Bourbon and vanlla, chewy dark malt, and some oak. Very smooth. The taste was a repeat of the aroma, very nice, but I missed the hoppy bite that first drew me to the non-BA version.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Opaque black color with a tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of spicy rye, vanilla, roasted malts, charred wood, and bourbony alcohol. Taste of roast, vanilla, spicy rye, smoke, pine, tobacco, dark chocolate, and a smooth, creamy finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Munster, IN). Pours a pitch black opaque pour, a moderate lighter brown head that stays around creamy, laces well enough. Aromas are a decent dosage of barrel, bourbon, vanilla, and wet oak, mixed with roasted malts and a touch of booziness, a bit sweet on the nose, with some cocoa coming in. Nice. Initial is medium bodied, not as heavy on the palate as expected, pretty good dryness and hop in the taste, moving to bourbon, warming alcohol, vanilla, and roast. The wet wood gives it a deeper element, not as sweet as the nose would suggest. Light cocoa, caramel, and some fant roasted coffee towards the backend. Not as boozy as anticipated, coats ok enough. My only knock might be that this thinned out a little more than I would have liked, although the bitterness is pretty nice. Cheers!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled at DLD ’09. Dark dark brown with a big off-white head. Roasty malt aroma with some oaky vanilla. Not as hoppy as a fresh bottle of the original, and I consider that to be a good thing. Roasty chocolate flavor with vanilla, oak and some hop in the finish. I really like what barrel aging did for this beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled at Small Peen. Had this just after regular AK. Is this aged in bourbon barrels? I smell it. This is a bit muddled. The AK was not that strong of a beer and the barrels only help a little. Brown sugar in barrels. Not a strong enough starter beer to deserve the barrels.
