Enjoyed on tap at Kaiser Tiger in Chicago, IL waiting to try out some Dark Lord. Appearance is pitch black, cola like, thin white rim. Aroma is rich in brandy, chocolate, oak, smells great. Taste is pretty good, not knock your socks off good like the non-barrel aged, but good nonetheless .

Draft at CCB. Aroma is super fruity lots of cherry. Light alcohol in the nose but not too hot. Lots of licorice as it warms. Taste is full of chocolate. Minimal alcohol in flavor but feel it with the boost later. Bartender said it was Portuguese Brandy barrel aged. Couldn’t find that in the database.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, thick black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of cocoa, oak, red wine, some anise and dark fruits into a bit of brown sugar, molasses into some vanilla, slight spice. Taste was a mix of dark chocolate, coffee, red wine, dark fruit into a bit of yeast, some oak, finishing slightly sweet.

Bottle: Dark, dark brown pour, not excessively thick looking with almost no head or bubbles that form after a soft pour. Aroma of wood that’s been lathered in semi-vinous booze & moderate maple syrup. A little bit of cocoa as well as some of your typical roasted malt, charred sugar, & burnt caramel stout-y aromas. Lots & lots of brown sugar on the palate. Sweet, balancing the booze nicely. Less vinous, more just a generic booziness on the tongue with a strong, yet well controlled tannic presence throughout. Light notes of bitter cocoa, mallow foam, & molasses lingering into the sticky finish.

Enjoyed at the 2014 Firestone Walker Invitational. Is there rye in here? The sharp nose would suggest as much. Coffee, vanilla, pepper both green and black. Flavor is odd -- piny hops lead; milk chocolate and vanilla follow. A sharp, spicy, soap-flavored front before a smooth stout finish.

Sampled at DLD 2014. Wow. It poured a dark brown to black color with a brown head. The aroma was of dark fruits and slight notes of peaches or grapes. The taste was similar with more of the fruity wine notes. Good stuff.

Sampled at the bottle sharing at the Hampton Inn on Dark Lord Dave eve. This was jet black it seemed to me. Rich tan head. Very thick. Nose of dark ripe fruit and chocolate. Very bold rich body. Thick in the mouth. Flavor is really rich, showing dark ripe fruit, chocolate, wood, and bitter hops. And oh yes, vanilla. A superb beer.
