Well, Rupert Witherbottom, you’ve finally arrived. This is a massive English-style barley wine aged for one year in barrels from Bourbon County, Kentucky.

This is a step up from most Three Floyds specialty bottles. This is vastly different than it being an actual good beer. This is red brown, cloudy w/ a very small head of large-bubbled foam. This isn’t horrible, just too sweet and w/o any strong barrel character just tastes like an old barleywine. It has an aged hoppy nose w/ mostly woody, earthy pine and is completely lacking in carbonation and malt character aside from simple sweetness. It finishes w/ some sort of dusty, earthy bitterness. I definitely will not be seeking this out again to say the least but at least it does not make me wince.

Tap: Murky, off-brown & poopy copper color with no head at all. Big aroma of caramel, toffee, bourbon, burnt brown sugar, vanilla, a touch of wood, & some dark fruit... Maybe raisin. Flavor is much more hoppy than the aroma indicates. Strong grassy & bitter earthy hop notes up front that fade into a sweeter & boozier finish. Sticky toffee, vanillin, bourbon soaked oak, anise, prunes, & some brown sugar covered dates. The hops hold a small earthy twinge until the finish, keeping the sweetness in check all the way through. Pretty nice stuff.

750mL bottle, #8. Poured clear, medium-dark reddish-amber with a short-lived beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, aged dark fruits, vanilla, and bourbon with accents of cognac and peppery rye.. quite a bit of barrel present, and it worked well. The flavor opened with slightly tangy bourbon and oak, with syrupy caramel, molasses, and vanilla sugars following.. peppery bourbon, oak, and sweet, tasty bourbon on the long, belly-warming finish. Heavier-bodied with low-ish carbonation on the palate.. a bit on the sugary side overall, but at no point was it really unbalanced or unenjoyable.. yum!

Amber to dark amber pour. Head looks nice. A little lace. Aroma of fruit and apple juice. Mouth is pretty light. Some hints of apple and orange in taste. Slight oak taste from the barrels. Hint of bitterness in the finish. I’m curious what the non-BA version is like.

San Diego Strong Ale Fest 2012. Clear amber color with ivory sheen. Nice raison, toffee, vanilla aromas. Medium body with soft co2. Spicy caramel, rich raison flavors with vanilla whiskey-alcohol is well cloaked--good.

Strong Ale 2012. Hazed orange pour with an off-white head. Nose is incredibly sweet and sugary. Tons of peach, some oak, and a hint of vanilla. Very mild whiskey, some citrus peel, and caramel. Flavor is all sugary sweetness. A bit of fruit character, mostly peach, some apple, and vanilla. Light oak character, a bit of whiskey, and some slight grassy bitterness.

Tap @ Strong Ale PP Carlsbad. Murky light caramel pour. Light boozie bourbon aroma with oak, caramel, and a near pear-type aspect. Taste is light bourbon, date, dried fruit, and semi-sweet malt. Clean, almost dry mouthfeel. Understated but well done.

A confusing beer. It tastes like tea and those doughy flowery flavored asian candies.

750 ml bottle shared with danielnovak3. Bottle 246/261. Served in a Jacobin tulip. A: Pours a dark ruby with a slightly darker colored body. A one finger off white head forms on the pour and recedes to a thick collar that leaves some sheets of spotty lace. S: Grains, wheat and fresh wood pop out with a mix of bourbon and sweet malts. T: There is an odd woody spice that mixes with the bourbon up front. There is a nice caramel sweetness with a wheat and grain like presence. The bourbon lingers through out the each sip. There is some slight anise flavors to this as well. M: Medium body with big, bold flavors. Medium to low carbonation. There is a grainy sweetness left on the palate. O: I like the base beer a little bit more in this case as the barrel sort of took over the whole beer, but it was still a solid beer overall. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-22-2011

Bottle. Rating #23. Dark amber/brown with very little head. Light medicinal aroma, oxidation. Flavor is brown sugar and toffee, liquid toffee, but not overly sweet, really freaking nice. (2349)
