porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Sep 14, 2008 (22 oz. bottle (pink wax) via trade with BBB63, thanks Mike!, cellared for 8 mos. after trade) This is a big bad beer....Pours cloudy, murky darkish amber with a little less than a finger of lightly yellowish biege head. Aroma of sweaty hops, pine, grapefruit, malty rock candy, caramel, raisins and licorice. Big, full, sticky mouthfeel. Texture features some chunkiness. Low carbonation. Flavor is big and malty, big and hoppy. Big murky, lightly smoky candy-malt sweetness and caramelized sugar overlain by a healthy dose of pine and grapefruit bitterness. Raisins and licorice as well as chocolate as it warms. Quite hot, even at three years of age, but that really doesn’t detract. Very warming. A big satisfying beer experience. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Sep 13, 2008 Bomber yellow wax courtesy of CaptainCougar. Big alcohol opens the eyes on first whiff. Also some bisket and caramel on the nose for aroma as well. Murky caramel body color with small head and did gush little upon opening. Caramel flavor with an alcohol presence that put me to sleep. If it were not for those crickets I would of slept like a baby. Dry palate need hydration after this one. Thanks Tom haukur (682), Reykjavik, Iceland Sep 11, 2008 yellow wax. Huge hoppy aroma. Brown with a small head. Hops hit your tongue hard, citrus hops. Big body. well balanced with caramel malts, but this is incredibly big. Reminds me a lot of it´s Victory Brewing sibling. Very good example of the style ATLBeerDog (280), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours hazy dark orange/red with a small 1/16 inch fairly white head. Smells of fruit, alcohol, honey – smells slightly oxidized. Bottled purchased just 4 weeks ago. Fist sip is fruity and thick with apple and pear notes present. Fairly hoppy but I am guessing the hops have mellowed. Very nice, very smooth. A world class American Barley Wine. travita (1851), Frisco, Texas, USA Sep 3, 2008 Deep amber to light brown in color with an almost tan colored head. clear like. Smell is caramel, sugary sweetness, malts, and hops. Taste is malts, brown sugar, molasses, and honey. Thicker beer that hides the alcohol well. fredandboboflo (1395), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 30, 2008 Bottle, 2008. Aroma of massive toffee and caramel with notable smatterings of citrusy hops. Flavor again huge toffee and caramel maltiness along with citrus, grapefruit, mango. Sweet but never sugary, balanced just enough. A little heavy for me on the palate. Still though, huge flavors and definitely worthy even if my rating is a bit below its average. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 29, 2008 2008 bottle courtesy of inkubus27 (thanks Tim!) Pours a medium-colored brown with a small light tan foamy head. Aroma of brown sugar, molasses, citrusy hops, raisin bread. Very interesting and a nice balance of bitter citrusy hops to the malty sweetness. Flavor is a bit sweet--lots of citrusy and caramel malt, lemon iced tea, and apple skins. Nice and flavorful. Not overly sweet like a lot of barleywines I’ve had recently. Wow, I’m a bit tipsy now but I would definitely not have guessed that this beer was 12%!! No alcohol presence whatsoever. I had this beer aged in bourbon at a beer fest earlier than this year, but in my opinion, this beer is best as is. Awesome stuff and pretty similar to SN Bigfoot. I’m not usually a barleywine fan, but this was a really superb beer. scraff (1921), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Aug 23, 2008 Pink Wax - Dark hazy coppery crimson, thin creamy white head. Complex aromas of orange marmalade and floral pine ride undercurrents of sherry, burnt brown sugar, and swirls of black cherry. Big sticky bitter pine and orange flavors weave through notes of musty caramel and cherry molasses. 12% warms throughout. Massive full bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. An awesome barley wine that has aged gracefully...
