Taverner (826), San Ramon, California, USA Apr 25, 2008 On tap at FFF. I have no idea what you folks who didn’t like are talking about, this is an intense, hammering, dank, floral and aggressive Barleywine with a tender side. On tap you can feel your tongue quake when the intense hop profile hits your tongue at the same time the caramel malt sweetness does. Bartzilla (441), San Diego, California, USA Apr 20, 2008 458th rating. Palate crusher. Too hot, too sweet. Behemoth let down. Gets100 because it’s elusive, has cute pink wax on the bottle and beer nerds stoke on these guys for some reason. Probably because it’s a chore to get. Naven (864), Poway, California, USA Apr 19, 2008 Bottle, pink wax from 2005. Drank this with a bunch of people. Just a super strong, syrupy beer. Very very very rich, sweet and strong. A sipper. All alcohol, no substance. Not my thing. msante79 (778), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Apr 12, 2008 bomber. Pours Redish orange with off white head. Aroma is sweet malts, hops, caramel and citrus. Flavor is malt, caramel, hops, caramel, and some spices, balanced yet bold. Good stuff. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Apr 11, 2008 22oz from EithCubes - thanks, Mike! Having read some recent reviews, I was a tad worried that I decided (after getting this in May 2007) to sit this one down. After cracking the yellow wax and pouring this one into my Hennepin glass, I was mostly relieved. A relatively dark pour - gleaming amber with a fairly lively head - and a big floral aroma are both promising. There’s a deep boozy quality to this one still, backed up by a hop profile that’s aggressive (man, if it’s this way after this long I have to try it fresh) and locked in combat with the thick malts. Lots of fruits, both tropical and autumnal, in the flavor and the full body contributes to a long and complex finish. Not quite what I’d hoped for, but quite good nonetheless. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA Apr 9, 2008 Yellow wax-topped bottle, sampled courtesy mcbackus. Darkish brown-orange color, viscous head. Lot of hops, rich spicy malts, pineapple, alcohol on the aroma. Still aggressive hops, sweet dark fruits. Thick mouthfeel. Real spicy, still hot, but large and well-balanced. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 7, 2008 2008 Purple Wax. I have had this beer in the past, but for some reason this year the beer just seemed better. Pours a ruby orange color with a thin head. Caramel and some citrus in the nose. The flavor is well balanced and hides the 12% very well. Nice amount of citrus hops in there to balance the malt and caramel flavor. $15.99 a bottle is expensive, but this is some fine stuff.
