drainey (231), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 22, 2007 22 oz. bottle. Pours with a cloudy, dark ruby body and a small, creamy off-white head. Nose is a very interesting & nice blend of dark fruit, bready malts, and a citrusy grapefruit aroma. Flavor nicely blends dark, sweet caramel maltiness with a grapefruity hoppiness. Finished with a strong hop bite that seemed a bit incongruous. Palate is very smooth, and alcohol well hidden. hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jan 21, 2007 sampled from a bomber. Slightly hazy amber in color. Aroma is caramel and some amarillo like orange hops. Taste is caramel, citrus hops, that blend nicely. not too much complexity, was hoping for more but maybe it needs to be aged. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Jan 21, 2007 22 oz. bottle Pink Wax via trade with CaptainCougar - Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a one finger thick light tan head. Very little lacing. Aroma is pine, resin, esters, and caramel malt. Quite nice. Flavor is much of the same. Nice balance. Alcohol is noticeable, but doesn’t take anything away from the beer. Slight stomach warming though. Palate is smooth. Medium to full body. A very enjoyable BW. Not sure it’s worth $18 though. Glad I had a chance to try it. Thanks Tom. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA Jan 17, 2007 Updated: Mar 25, 2007Deep ruby pour with yellowish hues, lacing is a cream/brown color left behind immediately by a mostly diminishing head. Looks thick, resiny. Aroma confirms this; Monstrous hop oils and malt structured around underlying notes of fruit and caramel. Other notes include caramel, pine and a whopping dose of alcohol. Flavor is brutal and unforgiving, pounding my mouth and senses with more PNW hops, fine quality malts and sugary resin. Palate is thick and uber smooth, so dry and numbing. I expected to succumb to the allure and taste of this beer, but at this degree of intensity I was surprised I enjoyed it so much. Finishes incredibly long and dry, hops pervade every corner of my mouth and set up camp until something else enters my parched mouth. But, that something was just more of this tasty nectar. Killer barleywine, not my favorite but they nailed it. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Jan 16, 2007 2006 yellow waxed top 22oz bomber. Pours a hazy reddish orange with a minimal beige head fading to a ring. Aroma has a ton of pineapple hops in it, also some grapefruit and resiny pine. Smelling the bottle I got a lot of peaches, though cmelling in the glass I got none. There is also some boozy notes, grain and some caramel malts. Flavor is again quite hoppy, but a little more earthy. The grain is in there as well with some fairly sweet caramel malts--sweeter than I’d imagined from the aroma--with a bone dry finish. Burps pine. This does have some characteristics of the Dreadnaught. Medium to full bodied with little carbonation. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Jan 15, 2007 Slight haze, amber body with small off-white head. The aroma is pine, grapefruit, caramel, toffee and vinous, quite nice. The flavor is tofee, pine, vinous and alcohol. Medium body with a sticky texture and a warm finish. pivnizub (4949), Bochum, Porúří, Germany Jan 15, 2007 Bottle (@ D’dorf Gathering) Amber coloured, mid-sized, quickly diminishing off-white foam; fruity and extremely resinous-hoppy nose; strong bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied; strong bitter-sweet finish with lots of hops sticking to the tongue. Very nice, well balanced stuff....... sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 13, 2007 Updated: Sep 17, 2007i just had hopslam and though i washed the glass this is really close to that. it’s just hoppy that’s all there’s to say about the aroma. this is so hoppy it could be an IPA or DIPA. not much like a barleywine. not as thick as it should be for the style. so not worth $18... rerate: on tap at clarkstreet alehouse. malty, super balanced, terrific. a lot better than the ’07 bottle.
