3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 10, 2006 Now that I’ve had the 2001 Behemoth that the Floyds "found" in the cooler and put on tap at the brewpub, I can discount my description below (and save my bottle of 2005 to age for a while). The draft pour is a deep cloudy brown, with a thin barleywine head. Bigass malts prevail in this one, with a bit of taffy apple-caramel sweetness. Alcohol is not heady or overpowering… at first, but sneaks up big time toward the end. There’s a touch brandy, with a swirl of strawberry, prune and cherry. Very thick and chewy.
Bottled off kegging line by 3F’s employee. My rating is tempered by the fact that the sample was bottled 4 years ago and not counter-pressure filled. But I expect to have some fresher stuff when the bottles finally come out this summer. This sample was slightly cloudy. Not as hoppy as most 3F’s, just the remains of a fine hop bouquet. This is, yes, slightly oxidized, but also sweet and somewhat fruity, with a hint of raspberry.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz bottle with purple/lavender wax. 2011?
Aroma is full of caramel notes with some toasted bread, toffee and a light roast character. Some burnt sugar and hints of honey. Light citrus and pine hoppiness, but the hops have mostly faded. Light alcohol spice.
Pours a somewhat cloudy, copper and amber with a small tan head that quickly disappears. Faint lacing and long legs.
Flavor has a moderate sweetness with lots of caramel and toffee. Some light treacle notes. Moderate toasted bread and nuttiness. Hints of roast and smoke. Moderate bitterness with light citrus and pine resin; again the hops have really faded. Light honey notes in the finish along with hints of alcohol spice.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth.
Overall a really nice barleywine that has asked really well. I like the way the malt character had integrated and the heart had faded. I’m not a fan of super hoppy barleywines so the she had helped in that way too. Oxidation is only showing hints of honey.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
What more can i say than what the others have said, this should be the base line for all barley wines, solid overall. Nice caramel, toffee flavors, not overly sweet, a little booze thrown in, not overly boozy, solid barley wine.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle (blue wax) to glass. A deep amber color. Smells like a hoppy 3F beer. A full mouth feel, and balanced taste. At the very end, a slight raisin sweetness. Nice!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A- Pours a deep orange huen with a nice, frothy head.
S- Sweet, light fruit, molasses, hints of date.
T- Lots of malt, starts off with deep brown sugar and raisin and moves to a huge hop back end that is very bitter and has a bit of an alcohol burn.
M- Thick with medium carb.
D- This could certainly use some aging but I liked it a lot. The look kind of threw me off but it really comes together.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Riley’s Wines of the World in downtown Madison. This has been sitting in my pantry for some time, and I was waiting for a special occasion to drink it, but fuck that. This poured out leathery brown in color. It had a huge caramel malt bouquet, with a subdued pine hop aroma. A pungent booze aroma leaped out, and made this nearly cloying. Sometimes, too much of something is not a good thing. The flavor was more of the same - booze, caramel malt, pine hop. Rather messy, in my opinion. It seems as though it’s just trying to be bold, and big, without being harmonized. I’m glad to have finally tried this, but I can’t say that this stood out as one of the top barley wines I’ve ever tried. It had the texture and appearance of a great barley wine, however.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Popped after a long HMOG weekend. This is something I have been wanting to try for quite some time and finally was able to get one in a trade. Pours a murky orange/brown with an off white head. Smell is big sweet caramel malty, hops, bit of light biscuit. Taste rides that perfect line of sweet caramel, citrus hops, fruity, some bits of welcome booze. I love big sweet American barleywines and this is a damn fine example.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber, thanks to Jeff. Pours somewhat murky brown. Aroma: caramel, herbal and resinous hops, some toffee but overall aroma is muddled -- a murky mix of big flavors that feel like they were thrown together just because. Taste: all kinds of meh. Palate: full body, soft carbonation. Overall: muddy.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2013 22oz bomber pours a hazy light brown with an off white head. Pretty hoppy for a year old. It almost tasted like an old ipa over a barley wine. Still great beer very sweet malt taste.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured from a red wax bomber bought at 3F in 2012 into a 3F Teku glass amber red with a lacy beige head that laces beautifully down the side of the glass.
Aroma is hoppy yet highly sweet. Very faint alcohol.
Flavor is molasses thick sweet with lots of citrus hops like a sugar pine tree. 10.5% ABV well hidden. Bitter sweet finish.
Extremely well balanced. Fave barley wines are American & this one is pretty much PERFECT!!
