3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DrnkMcDermott (2632) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - MAR 7, 2005UPDATED: NOV 10, 2006 Now that I’ve had the 2001 Behemoth that the Floyds "found" in the cooler and put on tap at the brewpub, I can discount my description below (and save my bottle of 2005 to age for a while). The draft pour is a deep cloudy brown, with a thin barleywine head. Bigass malts prevail in this one, with a bit of taffy apple-caramel sweetness. Alcohol is not heady or overpowering… at first, but sneaks up big time toward the end. There’s a touch brandy, with a swirl of strawberry, prune and cherry. Very thick and chewy.
Bottled off kegging line by 3F’s employee. My rating is tempered by the fact that the sample was bottled 4 years ago and not counter-pressure filled. But I expect to have some fresher stuff when the bottles finally come out this summer. This sample was slightly cloudy. Not as hoppy as most 3F’s, just the remains of a fine hop bouquet. This is, yes, slightly oxidized, but also sweet and somewhat fruity, with a hint of raspberry.

This really reminded me of Avery’s Hog Heaven. A little too much grapefruit for my taste. I wish it was slightly more balanced.

From the bottle, sweet caramel malts, toffee with a hop bite, definitely get some citrus flavor. Good stuff!

2009 bottle. Pours golden orange with a small white head. The nose is big caramel, citrus, pine and sweet bread. The taste is high sweet and bitter. Perfect balance with age. The texture is smooth but has some late pop. The body is heavy and the finish is long.

Bottle pour clear amber. One of pine hop, slight catty, and some caramel malt. Taste of grapefruit, pine, then malt sweetness, and alcohol, followed by strong mid palate bitterness and nice long finish. More hoppy than most barleywines, a nice example.

Barleywines are not my favorite style of beer. Usually, they’re much too sweet and too boozy to really work for me. That said, Behemoth is easily one of the best I’ve tried. It is sweet, but not cloyingly so. I don’t feel like I’m drinking medicine or something. And though I can feel the alcohol, the beer isn’t dominated by an underlying hard liquor element. This is a beer I might actually drink again sometime. Pours a rather hazy, brownish-yellow, with minimal, quickly dissipating head. There’s a fruity, hoppy aroma and the flavor is a bitter-sweet combination of malt and hops, with a satisfying mouthfeel and bitter finish. My bottle had orange wax on it (2013?).
