COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named after a 1988 Dodge Cargo Van that was the ideal vessel for hauling gear or stargazing with babes in the back. Big Black Van is a very aromatic Black IPA due to its abundance of New Zealand hops.† 75 IBU 7.5% ABV†

Draft at the source. Almost black, tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of pine needles and cocoa powder. Taste is bitter pine, chocolate, coffee. Nice.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2011 Draft on tap at the brewpub (Munster, IN). Stopped in quick before an eye appt down south. Had to try the Black IPA. Pours a wicked darker black hue, a touch of ruby on the bottom shows some midnight glow throughout, not quite black and not opaque, a moderate cakey lighter brown head sits atop, dies a touch and laces ok. Thicker layer remains, pretty beer. Aromas are a fresh blast of citrusy hops, lots of grapefruit, some tropical essence, lemons, florals, and grass. Gentle resinous pine mixes with a faint roast, pale malts and bread, biscuits, gentle toastiness. Very fruit melange of hoppy goodness. Initial is quite hoppy, a beast of bitter fresh hops up front preach florals and pine, tons of grapefruit, lemons, and grass. Dry and viscious, the beer offering some biscuits and toast into the fold, pale malts, gentle kiss of earthiness, roast doesnít show (as it should be). Dryness permeates the palate, giving a great hoppy edge to this beer, dominating the palate with some great bitterness lingering on long. Good flavors, perhaps even a bit harsh as far as the hops are concerned, but I very much enjoy it. Finish shows a gentle cocoa element, darker caramel in small amounts. More kisses of cocoa, light earthy roast, but the hops truly dominate this beer. Fresh and vibrant, fruity and earthy, with some shockingly bitter citrusy grapefruit, florals, and resinous pine. I get this. I like this. Very dry and bitter, but peeks of the malt base do peek through into the back and finish, but still remains true to the hops. Really reminds me of the first batch of Sticky Fat but better.. Markably more than the 2nd version of it. Top notch.. Aside from HF, best Black IPA Iíve had. EDIT: And most importantly in line with what this bastard style is SUPPOSED to be.. not just a gimmicky name for a Hoppy Porter.

On tap at Three Floyds over Christmas. Reviewed from notes. Pours near-black with a good tan head and a nice bit of lacing on the way down. Collar throughout. The nose carries some nice roast, coffee, and chocolate. Pine and citrus hops follow through along with that. Good flavor and a nice meld between the hops and malt. Light-medium body with good carbonation and a dry finish. Hops and roast combined well.

Draft at FFF, pours black with off white head, nose is piney, grassy, and orange citrus. Flavors have orange citrus, grapefruit juice, pine with a chocolate backend. Med bodied. Good beer.

Draft at 3F. Pours a deep brown black with an offwhite head. The nose is softly roasty, caramel notes and strange hops. Juicy and fruity, kind of clashing with the malt profile in the nose and taste. Lots of tropical notes and resiny. On tasting, the roast combats the hopping. Firm bitterness, balanced by some light sweetness, but the hops and roast just never really get along. Solid, not great.

On tap at the Three Floyds brewpub. Alright, not the biggest fan of the style but if Iím anything Iím open minded. Very dark brown pour that is translucent. The fact that it wasnít opaque somewhat disappointed me but Iím weird like that so never mind. I WAS BORN THIS WAY OKAY? There is a big thick cream colored head. Aroma of roast, fresh hops, mild citrus and chocolate. The hop notes are pretty fresh, nice, tropical. Flavor is hoppy, bitter, roasty, and nice. Lots of chocolate malt, coffee, bitter citrus and pine hops. Cocoa, earth, grass. I think it works pretty well. Pretty great for a style of which Iím not a big fan.

Imperial pint served at the source... Pours a deeper shade of mahogony, mostly opaque although somewhat less dark towards the edges and topped with a creamy stone white head... Green piney citrusy aroma, not getting too much of the new Zealand tropicalness from the regionís hops. Roasted malt and light cocoa coincide with the aformentioned... Flavors are a continuation of the same with a more prevalent emphasis on the roast and chocolate malt while the piney citrus hops take a backseat but remaining fairly assertive. Nice flavor profile overall with a medium to somewhat full body. Nicely executed overall.

Imperial pint pour at the pub. †Brown black with a creamy head. †Strong citrus hops nose, a little dirty/earthy in there too. †But itís mostly hidden by those hops. Citrus pine bitterness. Fruity and juicy with a strong hop bite. Sweet roast and malts but really itís a citrus pine domination. †Tasty.† Big black van† Imperial pint pour at the pub. †Brown black with a creamy head. †Strong citrus hops nose, a little dirty/earthy in there too. †But itís mostly hidden by those hops. Citrus pine bitterness. Fruity and juicy with a strong hop bite. Sweet roast and malts but really itís a citrus pine domination. †Tasty.† This is super fresh and judging by some of those ratings these hops will drop off fast. Right now, itís good stuff.

12oz pour @ Acre. Pours black with a frothy tan head and solid lacing down the glass. Aroma is pine, sweet malt, and a fragrant spice I cannot quite pin down. Smooth feel in the mouth with pine, caramel, slight roast, a bit of wood character, and some lingering bitterness.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours deep brown with a small off white head. Aroma is roasty but still sweet with a litt cocoa, lightly bitter chocolate and piney hops. Flavor starts sweet cocoa quickly turning bitter roast, a bit of coffee and dark chocolate before a bitter piney finish. Medium body and crisp carbonation.
